Pink Floyd - Three Tune Tuesday - Song Recommendations Week 31 πŸ—£πŸŽΆ

Week 31 is incoming and I'm quite surprised that I haven't done a Three Tune Tuesday based on these guys yet to be honest. They are one of the best bands to ever grace a stage in my humble opinion. They are one of the first bands I ever got into, as my older brothers and sisters often listened to The Wall and Dark Side of The Moon in the late 1980s.

Now, I could wax lyrical about 1980s Ireland, complete with dodgy wall paper, soda streams and massive phone books, but alas, this is a music post, so let's get back on schedule and talk tunes instead.

For those unfamiliar with TTT or Three Tune Tuesday....

The jist is as follows

Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs which I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Or why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and hopefully upvote it. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music.

Here are the week thirty one recommendations for Three Tune Tuesday

** Drum roll please.....**

Pink Floyd- Comfortably Numb

Released before I was born in the early 80s, with "Hey You" as the B side - That's some B side right there. It's a B-side that is better than the majority of crap you see in the charts these days that passes as music.

It's a track from the 1979 concept album "The Wall" which was written about a bitter and lonely rock star named Pink. In "Comfortably Numb," Pink is medicated by a doctor so he can perform for a show. It is one of just two tracks on The Wall that are standalone and are not connected with an adjacent track. The other track was "Mother".

Here are the lyrics:

Hello? (Hello? Hello? Hello?)
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone home?
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb
I have become comfortably numb
Okay (okay, okay, okay)
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more, ah
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb

Pink Floyd - Shine on you Crazy Diamond

Another classic, this time from the album Wish You Were Here. This song is a tribute to founding member Syd Barrett who unfortunately lost his way in life, partly due to all the drugs he was doing with other band members. The others managed to get back to normal afterwards but Syd lost his way and suffered from mental health issues in the 1960s and eventually left the band altogether in 1968.

The band wrote this song about Syd who is the crazy diamond that is the theme of the song. The measure of this song is that it is 8 minutes in, before the first vocals kick. They literally don't make them like this anymore, even a 4 minute song these days is an outlier, never mind a 13 minute 23 second mammoth that this one lands in at.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for faraway laughter
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light
Shine on you crazy diamond
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on you raver, you seer of visions
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine

Pink Floyd - Money

Ok, so that's one song from Wish You Were Here and one of the The Wall, so let's close out with a song from the 1973 hit album Dark Side of the Moon.

This album focused on the pressures faced by the band during their mad drugs years, and deals with the mental health problems suffered by Syd Barrett, as the band looked for answers through their musical ponderings.

I opted for Money after much deliberation, but it could easily have been any of the other nine tracks of this 42 minute masterpiece.

Money, get away
You get a good job with good pay and you're okay
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
A new car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money, well, get back
I'm all right Jack, keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the high-fidelity first class travelling set
You know, I think I need a Lear jet
Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a raise
It's no surprise that they're giving none away
Away, away
Away, away
Away, away
I was in the right
Yes, absolutely in the righ
I certainly was in the right
You was definitely in the right, that geezer was cruising for a bruising
Why does anyone do anything?
I don't know, I was really drunk at the time
I was just telling him, he couldn't get into number two
He was asking why he wasn't coming up on freely
After I yelling and screaming and telling him why

Sin Γ©, That's all folks, thanks for stopping by.

Thats all.jpg

That's it for another week. Those are your three songs for week thirty one. Let me know what you think - good, bad or indifferent? Did you like them all or just one or two?

Also, as I said before, I love getting good steers for new tunes, so please tell me about the latest and greatest from your playlist below and I'll be sure to check em out.

Thanks as always for stopping by everyone.

Peace Out

Hello @ablaze πŸ€— Really liked your theme here πŸ‘ Liked the music as well! Nostalgic, slow and kinda sad music always makes me feel calm and it's what I like to hear when I'm feeling sad or in a bad mood. Is that strange? πŸ˜†

They literally don't make them like this anymore, even a 4 minute song these days is an outlier, never mind a 13 minute 23 second mammoth that this one lands in at.

Agree with you! I think it's a shame we (society) put so much limits on art and what's appreciated.

Lately I've been feeling popular songs are just too boring. There's no excitement like in the late 80's and early 90's. 😫 Nowadays I see mostly the same base rhythm and similar tunes. I'm no expert on the subject at all but my ears got a lot better in the later years thanks to my partner who encourages me to listen the individual instruments behind the music. So I've been discovering the current "radio pop music" is just mehh - fine, in my opinion.

Your idea of Three Tunes Tuesday got me excited! But I don't really know a thing about interpret and analyzing music. Would it be ok if I talked about 3 songs I like and what they make me feel in a Three Tunes Tuesday post?

Hey there @blackdaisyft

Nostalgic, slow and kinda sad music always makes me feel calm and it's what I like to hear when I'm feeling sad or in a bad mood. Is that strange?

No that's pretty normal I think, as they will resonate with your own mood. I seem to have a tendency sometimes to deviate towards those type of bands - The National, Radiohead, Pink Floyd... It's not that I don't like more uplifting music, but I do find myself listening to more sombre songs a lot.

Yes, absolutely, just tag threetunetuesday and link @ablaze too so that I see the post. I love getting music recommendations and three friends on here @cmplxty @dandays and @blanchy are always giving me great recommendations n their posts or comments on my posts... Actually one of my favourite recent steers was Lanterns on the Lake who I've been listening to a good bit lately.

I really identify with that. I also know a bit of Radiohead but I'm awful with names of songs and names in general πŸ™ˆ but this gave me an idea and is going to make me do some research and learn more about exciting new stuff and hopefully the name will stick over time! πŸ˜„ I'm going to check the Lanterns on the Lake you suggested and get back to you tomorrow πŸ˜‰

Do you guys usually choose English written songs or anything is welcome? Lately I've been listening on repeat to a portuguese song writer Manuel Cruz, specialy the song named Libelinha (I know most his songs names and lyrics by heart, that's how deep I'm into him 😝)

Here's the link of the song if you wanna check it out. Hope you like it πŸ™Œ Manuel Cruz - Libelinha

Good shout on Manuel Cruz and only 192 views too, so very obscure and not well known, which I like as well. I have no preference whether the songs are in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, whatever. So long as they are good and my ears smile when I listen to them :)

It sounds like Manuel Cruz could be a great Three Tune Tuesday artist or you could pick three different artists. The only rule if you want to call it that is to post links to three tunes and include the #threetunetuesday or #ttt tag.

Awesome! It really got me excited to make a new post... I think it's time 😁

I'm gonna enjoy holidays first and hopefully start the new year the best way by sharing good artist and songs to you. I'll make sure to tag you and look foward to see your feedback.

Happy New Year! πŸ€—

Excellent - I'm looking forward to it. You are flying it so far on Hive, I have rarely see someone so patient who spends so much time on engagement and getting to know people before diving into post number 2. Well done, your patience will pay off in the long run no doubt. Chat soon.

I didn't know you post every day, dang dude! I don't know real estate either but that's a lot. Pink Floyd, Radiohead.. pssh primo. πŸ‘ŠπŸΌ

I don't know real estate either but that's a lot

:) :) :)

Yep posting to beat the band these days.... I'm weird like that, when I get a streak going, I can keep it going for a good while - pretty delighted to have made it through the majority of the holiday season and still getting posts published..

Sorry I didn't click your follow button sooner. I get weird about that button especially if they reblog a lot. I can be a real asshole sometimes.

Ha ha, I hear you man, you can't be following everyone and it's easy to think you are following someone and you're not... I actually just went through my follows the last day and there were some there from 3/4 years ago that are long since dormant, so I unfollowed a bunch of them.

Thanks for the follow anyway auld stock.. You've got............

That was nice. First track I listened to this am and it's been years since I heard that one. πŸ‘πŸΏ

Nice one man πŸ‘Œ

I don't know why but for some reason I've never liked Pink Floyd. I know a lot of people like it but the lyrics and sound of them to me is just awfully depressing so I always get bad vibes listening to them. Maybe I have some childhood trauma related to that hahaha

You're not the first person I've heard say something like this, they're not everyone's cup of tea. I personally think they were musical geniuses, especially The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here albums.

I think music is often nostalgic and I have memories of hearing these songs being played in my house growing up along with other bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Guns n Roses, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and loads more and they are all still stand outs in my musical taste today.

Yeah I have a similar issue with nirvana lol. I love me some RHCP though! I think their song that I've liked the most was the kind of recent one Rain Dance Maggie. Great tune! Lots of their classics for sure but I like the sound of the new one. I think when it comes to music, I tend to steer away from the dark sounding ones like some of the Nirvana stuff and Floyd in favor of upbeat stuff.

I don’t know if you’ve listened to this band before but they’ve got some pretty great songs!

Vampire weekend - giving up the gun

No way! I didn't think people existed who didn't like Nirvana! Ha ha.... Seriously though nostalgia definitely plays a part and whatever was playing in your house or friends houses growing up plays a apart in the music you naturally deviate towards..

Great shout on Vampire Weekend, I have been listening to these guys for years and love their sound, definitely more up beat. I'm a bit unusual when it comes to music though, as I will listen to pretty much every genre. The hardest ones to warm to for me would be Country and Western and some crazy non-structured jazz, but will still listen to either, if the song is shite, I wont listen to it again, but if it's good it'll get another listen and might make the playlist :)

Undoubtedly any Pink Floyd song is good, sometimes I make a compilation of listening to almost all their albums.

Ya I think so too, I could easily spend an evening listening to only Pink Floyd and be very happy and chilled out doing it.

Pink Floyd. Unreal solo in comfortably numb. I never heard the second song and I quite like it. Money is a mad one.
My favourite song by them is In the Flesh,

I know the lyrics are a bit outdated with the old racist but I love the guitar.
Staying with the theme of listening to the auld sombre bands, Song of the Week for me this week is Emeralds by Bears Den. Afew years old now but my favourite song by them.

My third song is a band that I was dragged to see before this pandemic kicked in. Not my type of music but I've been a fan ever since. I bearly got out of there alive. I had foot prints on my shirt after it. It's from Idles. This punk band from England who sound like they are the Brexit brigade but the wonderful thing is that they are singing against right wing Britain. Their lyrics are class. Look up their tiny desk to get a feel for them but check out the lyrics in this song. Lead guitarist is a dentist would you believe.

anyway that's my 3 this week buddy.

Ya Into the Flesh is a great track as well, I went to see Roger Waters up in the Point Depot or whatever they call it now around ten years ago. The Gig was class and Roger and his band played the Wall from start to finish. Musically and visually it was pure class, fair enough it wasn't Pink Floyd live, but it was as close as I could get without Michael J. Fox, a DeLorean and a Flux Capacitor!

Bears Den definitely fit the bill for the sombre genre, so as a result are right up my street :) Will check some more of their tunes...

You kept the best for last here, loving this tune by Idels tune man. It is one of those songs that you nearly have to listen to while watching the video πŸ‘Œ πŸ‘Œ

I had foot prints on my shirt after it.

Ha ha ha, I can just picture it! Not a gig I'd typically go to, but after listening to that, I'd definitely go see them, footsteps on the shirt and all..

Love a bit of Floyd.

I have Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here on vinyl and have listened to them regularly since I was about 15 years old.

I guess with prog rock bands it's difficult to pick individual tracks. I always enjoyed the track Time which fades into the Great Gig in The Sky on the first side of Dark Side of the Moon.

Fearless from the album Meddle is also a good stand alone track

Also used to enjoy a lot of early Floyd and some of Syd Barret's solo stuff (yes, I had long hair and wore flares when I was younger). Interstellar Overdrive is good track

I have Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here on vinyl and have listened to them regularly since I was about 15 years old.

Ah good man, ya, Vinyl was how I first listened to these classics back in the day as well, although I don't have a record player anymore, so it's mainly spotify now - I have loads of their CDs too, but they are gathering dust in the attic - I couldn't bring myself to throw them out when the digital music took over!

Time...... What a song, it was very close to making the three tunes and on another day it probably would. I must admit though the alarm clock at the start has always annoyed my brain a little bit, but it's worth enduring for the gold that comes after it...

Great shout on Fearless from the Meddle album too - another of my favorites. You're going right back with Interstellar Overdrive, on that album, I really love Bike! It's a bit of a mad song, but there is something in that madness that I love - The Syd effect we can call it...

Did you ever catch them live? The closest I got was a Roger Waters gig around 10 years and where he and his band played the Wall from start to Finish - it was class and I think I have some photos someplace from it - I might try to dig those out and do a post!
