# 850 - Modern Commemoratives Half Dollars - Part 10

in LeoFinance4 years ago

Today we will continue the series "The Modern American Commemorative Half Dollars".

The info below comes mostly from: https://moderncommemoratives.com/

"The United States Modern Commemorative Coin program began in 1982. That year, the US Mint released commemorative half dollar coins to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. Since that date, commemorative coins have been issued nearly every year to celebrate famous American people, places, events, and institutions.

Each commemorative coin program is authorized under an Act of Congress. The Act typically specifies the subject to be commemorated, the denomination of coins to be issued, and the maximum authorized mintage for each. Additionally, most commemorative coin programs include surcharges added to the cost of each coin, which will be distributed to specified beneficiary organizations or fund projects that benefit the community."

They were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof finish.

They will be presented in the order they were minted, but only one of each design.

The tenth is the PR70 DCAM 1995-S "Civil War".

"The 1995 Civil War Battlefields Half Dollar was issued along with a $5 gold coin and silver dollar for the preservation of battlefields associated with the Civil War."

PCGS graded 3,143 1995-S "Civil War", with 92 as PR70 DCAM. 317,396 1995-S "Civil War" were minted in San Francisco.

I bought this coin in 2014 for $311.00 and today's price is around $285.00. The issue price was $11.75.

The obverse of the half dollar features a standing drummer boy designed by Don Troiani.

The reverse features a cannon against a battlefield landscape.

This was designed by US Mint engraver T. James Ferrell.

My great, great grandfather was a Native Cherokee Indian and was a corporal in the Confederate army. That's a nice half dollar. It's actually kind of sad......I can remember not too long ago, we had several rolls of half dollars. We went to the store, and the cashier who was about my age, actually did not know what a half dollar was when she saw it. We had to tell her what denomination coin it was. Anyway, thanks for sharing and have a lovely weekend my friend!

Half dollars simply do not circulate in US, because of the size of the coin. Imagine how bad idea was to circulate $1 coins, larger than half dollars...

We do occasionally get a half or whole dollar coin in change; usually because the retailer doesn't want to deal with it. I know the Susan B. Anthony coins and others like it were often at a quick glance mistaken for quarters.🤗

I read somewhere that more Americans died in the Civil War, than any other war America fought in....So many young lives lost @ronavel.....

That was because there were Americans on both sides. As in all wars, people did not know why they were dying for...
