Happy #NeedleWorkMonday!
When my nephews were younger, and when they started watching and sort of understood cartoons a little, they love dressing up as their superheroes. They would take any towel they have, wrapped around their necks and pretend to fly and fight, just like their superheroes. One day, they might be Superman, another day, they might feel like Ironman or Ultraman and so on.
During that time, I had just started a little bit of sewing and the thought of making a cape for the boys excited me. It felt simple enough to sew one.
I went searching for a lightweight fabric and found a polyester fabric, one that would not wrinkle as easily, is heavy enough but still light. This specific cape was sewn for my friend's nephew. This was many years ago and I did not take progress photos back then because little did I know that I would be blogging in some years to come.
I cut the fabric to the shape of a cape and hemmed the edges.
At the neck part, I did a fold to insert a string that would be tied around the neck. It is important to find a fabric that is light so as to not choke the kids as they wear the cape and run around with it. Some people I see uses velcro to attach to the shoulders of a t-shirt but that would mean the boys would need to wear the specific t-shirts each time they wanted to play their superheroes.
Then, the fun part of creating the logos or symbols began. I sewed velcro on both the cape and the back piece of the logos. The logos used different colours of felt.
Now, felt does not fray and was the perfect material to create these babies. Plus, they are easy to sew and shape and cut out. They are lightweight too and easy to wash. Perfect!
Basically, to keep things simple, I chose logos that were easy to recreate :) One that did not have too many colours and shapes to recreate. In this logo of Ironman, only 2 main colours of bright yellow and bright red which can easily be found with felt fabric pieces. Just search for a suitable logo or symbol online, print out or copy the logo onto a piece of paper and transfer the copy onto a felt, cut out the pieces, and sew all the lines that are required to form the logo or symbol.
Now, the cool thing about having velcro at the attachment is that we could interchange the logos or symbols to our liking. For example, in this case, Superman is the other superhero that uses a red cape, just trace the logo onto felt, cut them out and sew them up with a velcro attachment behind.
Sorry, I do not have any photos that shows the velcro.
But, we can pretty much create any logos or symbols to be attached to the cape, depending on the mood of the kids :)
