Treasure Hunt | Backyard Chickens

Having chickens on the homestead was one of the first moves I made towards becoming self-sufficient. The eggs they provide me (when I can find them) are used to feed my dogs, breakfast for myself, baking etc. At the time of this video I had 15 total chickens, 14 hens and one rooster named Goober.

These hens will lay about 4 eggs each per week and in some cases they may even lay out to 5 or 6! That means I have an overabundance of eggs! Even with giving some away, feeding them to the dogs, freeze drying, baking and eating as much as I can, there's so many!

This vlog is a bit of a treasure hunt as I go out into their run and find random spots where they set up nests in the tall grass. Yes I need to cut it down a bit lol and have since this video.

I’ve also removed and placed their eggs into their nesting boxes and so far it does seem like most of them are understanding now where to lay them. Each morning I go in and check the boxes to find nearly 10 eggs!

Since this video there’s been a little bit of sad news on the homestead. One chicken ended up flew the coop and never returned and one other got out while the dogs were also out and let's just say they won't be making it sadly.

The homestead is growing though of course filled with challenges and when life is removed the homestead finds a way to return it as moo my cow will be having her baby in September.

Awesome, I am waiting to move out o the country side and begin a homestead in Nicaragua. Currently, the political climate there is a bit troubling which should bring prices down for quintas (small farm) in the rural areas. I am hoping for 2+ acres but we will see what comes are way. Nothing better than fresh from your own land.

I agree, you can homestead on just about any amount of land or prep a bit for you and your family. Wishing you the best in your adventures to come.

What a fun plant post🌿

I had chickens myself in El Salvador but had to move, so I don't have any right now but can't wait to move back and hsve chickens again.
What we did is always have an egg in a nest (use any kind of egg, the cheepest eggs you can buy because they will have to be thrown away after two weeks. Label them with a marker so that you know which egg is fresh and which one stays in the nest.) Our chickens would fight for the nests with eggs and none of them would go to the empty nest.
Hope that works out for you.

Great idea! They are starting to finally get a little use to laying in the boxes now. So many eggs!

Have you tried water glassing the extra eggs?

I haven't yet but this could be a great option

Yup yup.

Yay! 🤗

We live in the middle of the forest and let our chickens free range. Its been a long while since my hens laid eggs anywhere in their coop, let alone their boxes. For us, everyday is a treasure hunt as well!🐔🐓🥚🥚 I must say, as good as I am at finding them...my dogs are even better.😁😂 I hope you have a great day friend! Loved your video.
If you have access to a few golf balls or ping pong balls, throw them in their nests...and keep them locked in the coop till after you hear your "egg song". Then let them out. They'll figure it out pretty quickly. I wish you
the best of luck!🤗
