I grew up reading educational books that explained stress as a natural response to the demands we place on our bodies. But now, as an adult, I no longer need those books or a soothsayer to tell me how stress works, because it has become a lived experience for me.
There are days where I pile up activities on my to-do list and move through them by completing each task and constantly checking every box before the day ends. I do this with the common pressure to record my own daily progress like others. In the process, I end up heavily stressed. On weeks when this routine repeats itself, the result is often a complete breakdown of my body. I feel entirely burnt out, and the only thing that saves me is rest. Deep rest that allows my muscles to relax fully brings me back to feeling energized again.
However, stress goes beyond the physical. Most times, we assume that once our bodies have rested from the day’s work, everything else will fall into place. But that is not always the case. Sometimes, even when we are physically relaxed, emotional and mental stress can still find its way to us. In situations like this, no amount of physical rest can fix what is happening within. What we truly need during such a time is to completely declutter our minds, release our intrusive thoughts, and let go of people or situations that place any form of emotional strain on us.
The essence of this piece of writing is for everyone of us to learn to give our bodies what they demand at every given time, while also making our minds a safe haven for our thoughts. Only then can we live a healthier and stress-free life, with the physical and mental capacity to carry out our daily activities.
