The Shooting star

in The Ink Well7 hours ago

The land of Khali has been the envy of other villages because of its rich scenery. The king invested all he could to make his kingdom a place where tourist would stop by for fun. And since his reign after the sudden but expected demise of his father, it has been so.
His subjects adored him because he brought the vision of the previous kings before him into reality.

In this beautiful kingdom, there is a rumour that lovers who confess their love under the shooting star will have a long a blissful marriage living together forever if they wanted.

The trick to the rumour was that the shooting star had been said to appear only three times in a whole year and no one knew or could ascertain when exactly it chose to show up.

This was why it was considered a rumour because whenever the shooting star appears, it is either, it is not seen or people aren't with the right people they wanted to spend their lives with.
But the oldest man in the village who had just recently lost his wife had confirmed the rumour to be true by saying it was the major reason he and his wife lived a long life together.

Ada had always believed in fairy tales. Stories told to children to make them sleep. I guess she believed it more because the oldest man in the village happened to be her father.
When you grow up under the same roof as a man who believed that because he told his wife he loved her under the shooting star, that only appeared three times in a year, it was the reason he lived a long married life.

Ada never even heard her mum and dad have any major fight. Just a little disagreement here and there. That must have sealed the deal for her too.

Ikem on the other end never believed in any fairy tales, including the shooting start rumour. He thought it absurd that because you tell a woman you loved her under a shooting star, you will spend a long time with her, a happy life if I should add too.

"Ada, please I don't believe that." He said. "Your father spent a long time with your mum because your mum was a good wife."

"My mum's character is not in question here." She held his hands. "It's about living a long life with the person you want. When you wish upon a shooting star, it relays your message to God faster because it's closer to the heaven."

Ikem knew better than to argue with her but deep down he knew that argument was rubbish and like he learnt from the oldest man who happened to be Ada's father; "Do not argue with the woman you love. Lose the argument and win her or win the argument and lose her."

He thought, "this must have been what made him have a happy life with his late wife and not some shooting star."

"Ikem, I won't stop you from believing whatever you choose." She said. "But don't call what I believe rubbish."

Ikem had annoyed Ada with what he said. She was so heartbroken as she turned to leave. Then, all of a sudden, there it was, the shooting star.

"Ada." Ikem called. "Look."
She turned quickly and followed ikem's direction. The shooting star had appeared all of a sudden.

"Oh my! It's so beautiful!" Ada said as her eyes were so fixed on the sky.

Ikem stopped looking at the stars and fixed his eyes on Ada, as he watched her so marvelled at how beautiful she looked. "Just like a shooting star."
He took a step closer to her, "I wish to live and long and happy life with you Ada."

Ada for a moment realized that Ikem had just confessed to her under the shooting star. What had happened to her parents was also going to happen to her.

"I thought, you never believed in it?" She asked.

Ikem rolled his eyes with smiles on his face. "Well, I learnt this from a very wise man." He took another step closer to Ada. "You better lose the argument, and win her over. Than to win the argument and lose her."

"A very wise man, he must have been." Ada said as she embarrassed Ikem under the shooting star.
They both sat down under the star and began painting the life they would want.

At that point it seemed the oldest man had taught the two adults different lessons that would make them have a happy and long life.

Thanks for stopping by again❤️❤️❤️

I think the relationship between Ada and Ikem started well, with understanding and tolerance between them both. I think even without professing love to each other under the said shooting star, they were fated to have a long and happy marriage. Noneheles they were lucky to catch the star at the right moment.

I really didn’t want the story to end. I enjoyed every bit of it. Nice piece Venom

This is a really lovely story and rooted in cultural storytelling, i like reading Nigerian themed stories. Kudos!!

Your story is truly heartfelt. It leans more to the love side than to much drama. A different approach to the prompt. I love this line, “lose the argument and win her,” ties everything together in a very human way.
