PeakD Sustainability and Maintenance Proposal

in About PeakD7 days ago

For the past several years, PeakD has worked to provide one of the most complete user experiences on Hive while also supporting open source tools and infrastructure used across the ecosystem.

This new DHF proposal has a much narrower and more focused scope than our previous one.

A Sustainability and Maintenance Proposal

This proposal is not an expansion proposal. It is a sustainability proposal to keep PeakD, its core services, and as many Peak Open projects as possible moving forward during a difficult market period.

Our previous proposal originally requested 635 HBD/day but we lowered it down to 490 HBD/day back in February.
For this proposal, we are requesting 150 HBD/day.

That is a reduction of more than 75% from the previous funding level.

The goal is simple: keep the project alive, keep the essential work moving, reduce costs, and reduce the allocated development time from the team while still doing our best to support the Hive ecosystem.

What This Proposal Covers

With this reduced budget, our focus will be on the most important work:

  • PeakD.com updates and maintenance
  • Hive blockchain compatibility updates
  • Bug fixes, security updates, and dependency maintenance
  • Server, storage and database costs
  • Keeping as many Peak Open source projects available and maintained as possible

We will prioritize stability, infrastructure, reliability, and compatibility first. When decisions need to be made, we will focus on the work that has the most direct value for the Hive community.

New Developments

Even with this significant budget reduction, we do not want this proposal to be only about standing still.

AI coding agents are making it possible for small teams to remain productive in ways that were not realistic before. Because of that, we expect to continue shipping some new features and improvements, even while reducing the total funding and allocated team time.

To get an idea of what a small team can accomplish nowadays you can have a look at what we delivered in the past few months checking out the changelog page: https://peakd.com/about/changelog

image.png

That said, the scope will be more selective. We will focus on improvements that are realistic, high-impact, and maintainable under the reduced budget.

Team

This proposal supports the core PeakD effort led by @asgarth and @jarvie.

The funding will help cover reduced allocated development time, project coordination, maintenance, and the essential costs required to keep PeakD and related open source projects operating.

Transparency

We publish our updates on the Hive blockchain through our personal and project accounts (@peakd and @peak.open).
As always, our work, progress, and decisions will remain visible to the community.

If Funding Is Not Available

Even without funding, we will try to keep going for as long as possible.

PeakD has been part of Hive for many years, and we care deeply about the ecosystem. But the level of work we can sustain depends on available resources. This proposal is designed to be realistic: smaller, more focused, and aligned with current market conditions.

I love PeakD and this will be the hardest proposal to not support under current market conditions.

I will not support it because I think we should show extreme austerity commitment since Hive is basically broke, but I commend the fact that you are asking for one of the lowest daily pays we have seen on this blockchain in a very long time.
A -75% cut is meaningful for one of the most important and possibly the best web frontend we have, already shows a good signal that things can keep running even we keep going down.

Still this (having to not support and be against funding something I love) is the kind of thing I hoped to avoid by baking into the protocol a signal to cut DHF payouts. I didn't want to be against it because I personally admire the team, I know you are very technically capable, and more than that, you personally committed to Hive. True enthusiasts who have put a lot of effort and brought true, clear and easily visible value for Hive, much more than me or anyone ever could even if we had a much bigger budget and time ourselves. You guys run efficiently and effectively, always have.

Still I can't support funding anything before we can show radical restraint. Right now we are not giving a good impression to outsiders when it comes to fiscal restraint. I don't think that 150 HBD a day will be very impactful (although of coure over time it compounds), but beyond the sell pressure it is about showing we are capable of harsh austerity measures when it is needed, that would bring confidence and raise the morale. It is about showing that in a worst case scenario (complete depeg and death spiraling) we can still keep working, because that is a real possibility knocking at our door. And to prove we can do that IMO we need to defund everything, specially when we are about to hit yet another all time low, we do that almost on a weekly basis by now.

Still luckily my opinion and my vote have no impact.

Good job and good luck to all of us. I admire you guys beyond words. You have probably had more posivite impact on Hive than basically almost any other team. Won't support and trust me, it hurts to not support it.

(Edit) I originally took this proposal as a bare bones just keeping the lights on thing and can support that. After seeing a replie by Peakd stating that it is for a bit more than that, I've changed my mind. All projects need to go to "keeping the lights on" mode only right now...

Original reply
I don't think you are being realistic. These things take money to run and if a project is conscious of the economic realities to cutback to bare bones when necessary, like now is exactly what we should be expecting of all the projects being funded.

To keep asking for money to bring new features when the economy can't support that would be being irresponsible and Peakd has just shown that they want to be responsible and are thinking about the platform over their own goals and wants.

What should we expect and what can be done right now in the bear market to bring things under control? Exactly what Peakd is asking for in this proposal. Is it realistic for projects to run 100% out of pocket for the builders in the unforeseeable future? Absolutely not, because bills, monthly bills that most adults hate, but know need to be paid.

So,this proposal should be supported by those who use Peakd. If you don't, then maybe you shouldn't care, though Peakd is the #1 frontend, so even those who don't should see the value.

What proposals shouldn't we support? Any and all that keep asking for funding beyond what's necessary to keep things running as is with no new building or if they decide to build, they do that out of their own pocket, for now. They can ask for funding retrospectively if it is warranted, because well, that's already happened, lol.

I hope we support those cutting things down to the bare bones and defund those asking for funding that is currently not critical for the blockchain to run smoothly. That includes hard forks that aren't necessary for our digital security.

I've shared this in the past but probably better to do it here in the comments as well.

Software can go into "maintenance" mode. But people simply don't go into maintenance. Developers move on, and once they are gone they will not come back.
If we remove all sort of additional work and we don't allocate a minimum monthly amount to keep a part time team active on the project I don't think there will be a team around if somehow we decide to resume the development in the future.

That said, if this is the decision of the community it's totally fine.

It is what it is and the post says there are 2 of you who use hive. Are you going anywhere and unable to take a break when the fiscal situation calls for it?

I would say it is possible. Once you start a new adventure it is hard to go back

Thanks, really appreciate your thoughts.

I can totally understand your point of view. Looking at how other recent proposals are doing it looks like the community is not going to support more DHF spending anytime soon.

Leading the way. :)

this is good. thanks for doing this

I'll support this, I'm lost without peakd on hive

Thanks 🙏

To clarify ...PeakD will stay online either way for the foreseeable future. The proposal is mostly required so we can still allocate time to improve the project and make it even better.

This is the kind of clarification that reinforces how valuable you guys are for Hive. I personally admire you.

Hmm, I was under the impression that this proposal was for keeping things going as they are, just keeping the lights on. I can support that. You need to pay the bills, but paying for new building(except for critical security issues)in this market is unreasonable, IMO.

Supported! Better "late" (2 days off due) then never, right? 😅

I will vote for it when Im back on my computer. PeakD has always been a great experience! 👍 Thank you!

Is it a bug?

Probably an out of sync Hive node. Can you try switching to a different one in your settings?

I tried

rpc.mahdiyari.info
api.openhive.network
api.hive.blog
hive-api.3speak.tv

But still the same error. Normally is set to Auto

I was able to support the previous proposal

I used the hive blog (old ver) to vote the proposal. It worked there

Thanks !!

Are you using Keychain? What happens if you try to vote directly from this page?

https://peakd.com/proposals/382

I used manually the active key when I encountered the error

do you have any plans to have an app on ios

No, not with current proposal budget.

BTW the website already works pretty fine if you install it on your phone. Still better on Android but not too bad on iOS either.
