“he eat what?”
The query blurted out before anybody could moderate it. It carried surprise, disbelief, and a little bit of curiosity all mixed together. Few heads turned slowly around the table, yearning for the undoubtedly forthcoming justification.
Apparently, he had wandered into a little roadside eatery with a menu that was more of a recommendation than a constraint. Spice permeated the air, while on the stovetop pots simmered as silent secrets. Rather than inquired about the ingredients of the cuisine, he just indicated one dish and said he would take it
“He ate what?”
The reaction spread quickly. Some people laughed. Others looked slightly horrified. One person leaned back in their chair as if the information alone could reach their own stomach.
And that is why, hours later, people were still shaking their heads, repeating the same amazed question with half a laugh and half a gasp.
“He ate what?”
