This was our away day for the local Golf society. A championship course right out on the edge of the atlantic ocean.
It has been a poor couple of weeks weather wise and the day started out no differently. We have driven three hours to the edge of nowhere past a small town called Clifden to find a bleak and wind strewn course.
It was raining from the heavens when we landed so all the rain gear was thrown on and prayers said before we entered the storm.
There was no backing out once we had landed. Luckily after about four holes the rain had stopped for the day although the wind remained a struggle for the full round.
I hadn't played any golf in the past couple of months between a busy life and my new hurling career going full swing at the moment.
We accepted the challenge though and I have to say that I really enjoyed the course. It was like a larger version of the one that i grew up playing and suited me down to the ground.
Hard tight fairways, lots of wind, sand dunes and not a tree in sight. Perfect for my game.
We played in a two ball scramble format which means myself and my partner Brian play every shot but we can pick the best of the two shots every time as our in-play ball.
I would be the big hitter and he is tasty around the greens so it was a good team in theory even if we were bottom of the rankings teeing off. Maybe due to me not playing any golf and the rest of the group playing every week.
Either way we played a great round between us and won by three shots from the field to collect the trophy and the prize.
We followed that up with dinner and a few pints as you do on an away day trip.
A good weekend all around.
We also won our hurling match on the Sunday and progress to the county quarter finals in two weeks time so it's back to training for me again on Tuesday.
