One of the biggest events of the summer here is the Galway horse races.
It's one of my favorite weeks in the city and even though I've moved back towards home I still make it up for at least a day every year.
I love it. Back in the early days when we were in college we would take the full week off our summer jobs and just go drinking for the full week of the races. The city would be hopping and the pubs full all day long. It's a great week.
Nowadays times have changed and we are lucky to get up even once but I till look forward to it. Our local pub runs a bus up to the track so we can have a few early drinks and head up as a group for the day.
The track gets a bit too busy by the weekend so Tuesday is perfect for a bit of fun but being able to move around to see it all.
We're doing the same again this year and heading up in a few hours with the local crew. Hopefully to make some money but at least to have some fun.
I had a great result last year with myself and another friend winning big on the last race form a tip which set us up nicely for going back to the pub afterwards with a big stack of cash in the pocket.
I doubt we will be as lucky again but you never know.
The first of seven races starts at 5pm but I need to find a few tips in the meantime form the people who know a lot more than i do. Our local pub is a racing crowd as well so there is a lot of knowledge in the group. The owner had his own horse racing yesterday that managed to place at 12-1 and give us all a little profit to get started for the week.
Now I just need to find a few more.
