When I graduated as a Food Engineer, I never imagined that one day in my life I would practice my profession so far from home. When I arrived in Ushuaia as part of my nomadic journey, as I've been doing for over a year and a half, I decided to try my luck and find a part-time job. What I didn't know is that I would get it so quickly and that it would be so meaningful to me because it was related to what I studied. Besides traveling in a beautiful place, I also had the opportunity to expand my professional experience, and that's something I'll always be grateful for ❤️.
Cuando me recibí de Ingeniera en Alimentos nunca me imaginé que alguna vez en mi vida iba a ejercer mi profesión tan lejos de mi casa. Cuando llegué a Ushuaia en el marco de mi viaje nómade, como vengo haciendo hace más de un año y medio, se me ocurrió probar suerte buscando un trabajo de medio tiempo. Lo que no sabía es que lo conseguiría tan rápido y que sería tan significativo para mí porque se trató de algo relacionado a lo que estudié. Además de estar paseando en un lugar hermoso, también tuve la oportunidad de ampliar mi experiencia profesional y eso es algo que voy a agradecer siempre ❤️.
Since I began this journey through Argentina and its surrounding areas, I've almost always been doing work-for-lodging exchanges to save money. This option involves working a few hours a day at a hostel in exchange for a place to sleep and some food. In Ushuaia, my shift was at the reception desk, so the tasks didn't really require much effort. In fact, I was able to combine this time with my work at Hive, which is what financially supports my daily life these days. This way, I only worked 24 hours a week and had plenty of free time for trekking and exploring the city 😃.
Desde que empecé este viaje por Argentina y alrededores, casi siempre estuve haciendo intercambios de trabajo por alojamiento para ahorrar dinero. Esta modalidad consiste en trabajar algunas horas por día en el hostel a cambio de un espacio para dormir y algo de comida. En el caso de Ushuaia, mi turno a cumplir era en la recepción, por lo que las tareas no me llevaban mucho esfuerzo en realidad. De hecho, este tiempo lo podía combinar con mi trabajo en Hive, que es lo que sostiene económicamente mi vida diaria ultimamente. De esta forma, solo trabajaba 24 horas semanales y tenía mucho tiempo libre para trekking y explorar la ciudad 😃.
But since I had already visited this place in 2023, I was already familiar with many of the landscapes, and I wanted to take advantage of the time to do something else. That's how I decided to send my resume to a food manufacturing establishment just a block from the hostel. There wasn't a specific job search; I just sent it so they would consider me in case a position came up, and I was very surprised when the owner called me for an interview the next day. I had graduated more than five years ago, but during all this traveling phase of my life, this would be the first job I would have as a graduate engineer, so I was very nervous 😅.
Pero como yo ya había visitado este lugar en 2023, muchos de los paisajes ya los conocía y tenía ganas de aprovechar el tiempo para hacer algo más. Fue así como se me ocurrió mandar mi curriculum a un establecimiento fabricador de alimentos a solo una cuadra del hostel. No había ninguna búsqueda en específico, solo lo mandé para que me tuvieran en cuenta en caso de que surgiera algún puesto y grande fue mi sorpresa cuando el dueño me llamó para una entrevista al día siguiente. Yo me había recibido hace más de cinco años, pero entre toda esta etapa viajera de mi vida, este sería el primer trabajo que tendría como ingeniera graduada, estaba muy nerviosa 😅.
I met with the owner of the establishment, who turned out to be very approachable and asked me about my stay in Ushuaia, even though I'm from Buenos Aires. I told him my whole story, and he congratulated me on my courage in coming all the way there, because being 3,000 km away from home isn't easy either. We spent the morning talking, and he told me about his factory. They work with a typical Ushuaia product: king crab, caught locally in the Beagle Channel. In the city center, there are many restaurants that offer king crab dishes for over $40 a portion, but they process it and sell it preserved and smoked in cans with brine or oil 😃.
Me reuní con el dueño del establecimiento, quien resultó ser una persona muy accesible y me preguntó por mi estadía en Ushuaia, siendo yo de Buenos Aires. Le conté toda mi historia y me felicitó por mi valentía de haber ido hasta allá, porque estar 3000 km lejos de casa tampoco es sencillo. Pasamos la mañana conversando y me contó de qué se trata su fábrica. Ellos ahí trabajan con un producto típico de Ushuaia, la centolla, extraída localmente en el Canal de Beagle. En el centro de la ciudad hay muchos restaurantes que ofrecen platos con centolla a más de $40 la porción, pero ellos la procesan y la venden conservada y ahumada en latas con salmuera o aceite 😃.
This quickly caught my attention because I hadn't had much exposure to seafood during my training, so I kept listening to him. Finally, what he proposed was an update of some legal documents for current food legislation. This factory is small, and there's no one in charge of doing that, as there are only two employees in charge of production and one in charge of sales. He's also a fisherman himself, responsible for bringing in the crab on his own boats. I loved the idea, although I was still nervous because I'd never done anything like this before. I tried not to let it show and accepted the challenge without hesitation 😃.
Esto rápidamente llamó mi atención porque durante mi formación profesional no tuve mucho acercamiento a los productos pesqueros, así que seguí escuchándolo. Finalmente, lo que él me propuso hacer fue una actualización de unos documentos legales de la legislación de alimentos vigentes. Esta fábrica es pequeña y no hay nadie que se encargara de hacer eso, ya que solo hay dos empleados que se encargan de la producción y uno de las ventas. Luego, él mismo es pesquero y se encarga de traer la centolla en sus embarcaciones propias. A mí me encantó la idea, aunque mis nervios seguían porque nunca había hecho algo así. Traté de que no se me notara, y acepté el desafío sin dudar 😃.
In total, this job took me a month and a half, during which I worked Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. Our agreement was a pay of $6 per hour, a somewhat low price, but in my case, I wanted to take the opportunity for the experience more than the money. During all that time, I had to review all the factory documents, read them, update them, fill in missing information, and learn about the production of canned king crab. They also canned other products, such as shrimp, scallops, and fish like trout, sea bass, and tuna, so I also had to study some things about these animals. I had to read a lot (a lot), but after so much downtime from my profession, refocusing my mind on these related things felt really good ❤️.
En total, este trabajo me tomó un mes y medio, en los que trabajé de lunes a sábados de 9 AM a 1 PM. Nuestro acuerdo fue una paga de $6 por hora, un precio algo bajo pero en mi caso, yo quería tomar la oportunidad por la experiencia más que por el dinero. En todo ese tiempo, tuve que revisar todos los documentos de la fábrica, leerlos, actualizarlos, completar datos que faltaban e interiorizarme con la producción de centolla enlatada. Ellos además hacían conservas de otros productos, como langostinos, vieiras y pescados como trucha, róbalo y atún, por lo que también tuve que estudiar algunas cosas sobre estos animales. Tuve que leer mucho (muchísimo), pero después de tanto tiempo de inactividad en cuanto a mi profesión, volver a enfocar mi mente en estas cosas relacionadas se sintió muy bien ❤️.

I'm a person who loves studying and everything academic, so I worked hard until I left the job perfectly organized and complete. Since it was only a temporary position, I ended up getting paid in cash, about $670, which in Argentina is worth all those bills. The day I got paid, I was very happy because it was literally my first salary as an engineer, and in Ushuaia, something unthinkable for me. I liked working there so much that I could do something more productive during my time in the city, and if I could get paid for it, even better ❤️.
Yo soy una persona a la que le encanta estudiar y todo lo académico, por lo que me esforcé hasta que dejé el trabajo perfectamente ordenado y completo. Como era solo un puesto temporal, al fin de esto me pagaron en efectivo unos $670, que en Argentina se ven como todos estos billetes. El día que me pagaron estaba muy contenta porque literalmente fue mi primer sueldo de ingeniera y en Ushuaia, algo impensado para mí. Trabajar en este lugar me gustó mucho como para hacer algo más productivo en mi paso por la ciudad y si de paso pude recibir dinero por eso, aún mejor ❤️.
Being able to combine travel with some engineering work was one of my best anecdotes at the End of the World. I always say that when this nomadic phase is over (which I don't know when that will be), I'm going to dedicate myself fully to food engineering. Reconnecting with my professional side and putting myself to the test filled me with pride and made me realize that I love and enjoy what I studied. Plus, the temporary position was exactly what I was looking for, and everything aligned perfectly for it to happen. I was glad it all worked out this way, and it gives me the certainty that my career wasn't overshadowed by my traveling side 😅.
Poder combinar el viaje con un poco de trabajo de ingeniera fue una de mis mejores anécdotas en el Fin del Mundo. Yo siempre digo que cuando se termine esta etapa nómade (que no sé cuando será), voy a dedicarme de lleno a la ingeniería de alimentos. Reencontrarme con mi lado profesional y ponerme a prueba a mi misma me llenó de orgullo y me hizo dar cuenta de que lo que estudié me encanta y entretiene. Además, la posición temporal fue justo lo que estaba buscando y todo se alineó perfectamente para que así sea. Me alegré de que todo se haya dado así, y eso me da la certeza de que mi profesión no quedó opacada por mi faceta viajera 😅.
