‘Tis the season for blackberries!! I’ve been noticing between us and our neighbor, when coming home from work, the abundance of blackberries! I’d been meaning to go picking, but the hot weather put me off and then work came along. So this afternoon, I took advantage of about 20 minutes or so, to go do it. 😎
I doned a nitrile glove to protect me from the stains that occur and grabbed a container and headed out.
They are super nice, big and juicy this year! I worked my way back and forth in about a 25-30’ swatch and was going to call it good. Once near the garage, I spied an unbelievable area mixed in with our pine trees. Of course I had to pick more!
I asked ChatGPT about the particulars of blackberries. Here’s what it had to say:
Blackberries are edible fruits produced by several species in the Rubus genus, which also includes raspberries. They’re not true berries in the botanical sense—instead, each blackberry is an aggregate fruit made up of many tiny drupelets clustered around a central core.
Here are a few interesting facts:
- Appearance: They start out green, turn red as they ripen, and become deep purple-black when fully ripe.
- Taste: Ripe blackberries are sweet with a pleasant tartness. Wild blackberries are often more flavorful but can be smaller than cultivated varieties.
- Nutrition: They’re rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and fiber. They also contain antioxidants called anthocyanins, which give them their dark color and may help protect cells from oxidative damage.
- Growing: Blackberry plants are perennial shrubs with arching or trailing canes. Many varieties have thorns, though thornless cultivars are popular for home gardens. They thrive in full sun and well-drained soil.
- Uses: Blackberries can be eaten fresh or used in pies, jams, jellies, smoothies, syrups, wines, and desserts. They also freeze well.
- Wild blackberries: In many parts of the world, wild blackberry bushes grow along roadsides, forest edges, and fields. If foraging, make sure the berries are fully ripe and avoid plants that may have been sprayed with pesticides or are growing near busy roads.
A typical 1-cup (about 144 g) serving of blackberries contains approximately:
- 62 calories
- 8 g of fiber
- 2 g of protein
- About half the recommended daily intake of vitamin C
- Roughly one-third of the daily vitamin K requirement
Because they’re low in calories and high in fiber, blackberries are a nutritious snack that can help promote fullness while providing important vitamins and antioxidants.
So tonight after dinner, can you guess what’s for dessert?
Blackberries! 😋😁
That’s gonna be it for today. Take care and enjoy the rest of your day wherever you are! 🙏🌏🙏

BSB Psalm 91:1-16
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Surely He will deliver you
from the snare of the fowler,
and from the deadly plague.
He will cover you with His feathers;
under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the calamity that destroys at noon.
Though a thousand may fall at your side,
and ten thousand at your right hand,
no harm will come near you.
You will only see it with your eyes
and witness the punishment of the wicked.
Because you have made the LORD your dwelling—
my refuge, the Most High—
no evil will befall you,
no plague will approach your tent.
For He will command His angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
They will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and cobra;
you will trample the young lion and serpent.
“Because he loves Me, I will deliver him;
because he knows My name, I will protect him.
When he calls out to Me,
I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble.
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him
and show him My salvation.”
