The day began at church. Despite the hardships from the flood, the mood was thankful; thankful that yes there were losses, but no loss of life. Folks have lost stuff-some replaceable and some not, but nonetheless, just stuff. Thank God for the saving of people’s lives! 🙏
The towns are slowly cleaning up from last week’s flooding. There’s still a lot of standing water around, road closures and hard and grimy work to be done. People are moving forward despite how hard that it is-but what else can you do? The outpouring of love and support is a reminder that people are doing the right thing by one another. It brings hope.
After church today, we took a trip through Everson down around Riverside Park where we often wander along the shore of the Nooksack River. The park is closed due to water in the parking lot. We turned onto the road heading north to see about Sumas.
As you can see, more standing water. In this next photo towards the Canadian border, the road is closed. The border station is currently closed.
There are still some other roads closed as well. This one despite the mail carrier (Amazon mail gets delivered on Sundays here), is closed. It used to be. 2 lane bridge over the Sumas River, but the flood of 2021 took it out. They rebuilt it and made it into a one lane bridge. I’m guessing this flood took it out again.
We drove by a friend’s house that was devastated in 2021. So it was again with this flood. It’s unimaginable to me that this has happened once again. This area saw a flood in 2020-although minor in comparison. Then in 2021- they called it the 100 year flood meaning it’s the type that happens every hundred years or so. So how is it that here, just 4 years later, there’s another ‘100 year flood’? They have not done sediment and gravel bar ‘dredging’ since the mid 90’s. The last major flood of these types was November of 1990. Perhaps they need to do some river maintenance? Duh!!🙄
I bet there would be lots of letters to Santa wishing for a solution to the madness! If only those in power would do the job they were voted into, then maybe something could be done. As it is, the meetings that have been held in the past are not productive. 🧐
So sad that the people are at risk but the fish and ‘other ecological features’ win out over the safety and well being of the people! 😡
We are facing yet again, another atmospheric river this week-a potential for another 2-6” of rain. Please pray 🙏 that the storm dissipates and we are spared.
