A long overdue round of golf with 2 old friends

It's always good to mix things up, to try something different, to test your boundaries. You can apply this to many things - work, sport, even life itself.

Today, as I sit here looking at a flashing cursor in a white box and think about what to post about on Sunday, I think about golf and football, my go to sports. I actually played golf with some old friends last week, so I'm going to opt for a golf post.

Long time no see

We were supposed to meet up in late December and play a scramble at a golf course in the middle of Ireland in Athlone, which is the same distance away approximately for each of us. We were really looking forward to a catch up, some golf and a couple of pints afterwards, but the weather went against us, and a hard ground frost meant that the course was unplayable and we would have to rearrange.

We finally got around to replaying last week, but this one was very nearly postponed as well, as once again the weather was acting the bollix, with a another morning frost. Luckily the frost was not nearly as severe this time, and after a one hour delay and a few cups of tea, we were out playing and having the craic.

Worst Possible Start

So, because of the frost delay, there was a queue of people at the first tee and that wouldn't usually bother me, but for some reason I froze a little and blazed not one but two balls high and right. It 50/50 whether either ball stayed in bounds and I could find neither, so a big fat scratch went down on the first and the two lads pencilled in bogey fives.

Onwards towards the second and it was a long par 5. After pushing to big slices right on the first it was time to readjust and get that baby draw that I can hit. I wound up and unleashed and I certainly got the draw, but not a baby draw that waa required, instead it was a monster draw also known as a hook! Out of bounds left! Three swings, 3 Out of Bounds, 3 lost balls! What a feckin disaster!

These weapons were in danger of ending up in one of the many lakes dotted around the course! No, not today I thought and at last from the par 3 3rd hole, I started to hit a few decent golf shots.

The Wooden Spoon

My scratch/scratch start meant that I was destined for last place and the infamous wooden spoon, but I did manage to get some solid pars and hit a bomb of a drive which came up just short of the green on a short 330yard par 4. It was down wind in fairness, but it was one of the best drives that I've ever hit, which was sweet.

The two lads played great golf and both had birdies and beat me by 3 shots and 10 shots respectively, not my best day at the office, but I didn't care as the company was good and I did play some good golf, once I got that shocking start out of the way.

The 17th is a really nice looking hole and is 175 yards, with a 165 yards carry over water and water to the left and behind the green. The photo does not do it justice. I Signed for a nice par, with a low 6 iron into the wind overshooting the green. A chip and a putt gave me a 3 point par which was nice.

We finished up at the 19th with a pint and a bite to eat. It's always good catching up with old friends, but when you throw in a gamebof golf and a nice pint of Guinness you really can't go wrong.

This is what golf is made for right. Great to visit some friends, and to drink away the bad game! I went out this afternoon for a quick 9 and a drink and bite afterward. Something so soothing about this sport. Awesome post, my friend!

Yes, regardless of high bad I play, I am gunning to get out again to put things right. Equally, no matter how good I play, I am gunning to get out again!

That is the greatness of golf hey. One good shot and 17 bad holes, that one good shot will get you back out on the course! What a game.

Yes big time amd there isn't many sports where sometimes you hit a shot as good as a tour pro. 3 wood to 6 feet for example.. Rain has meant our last 3 Sunday comps have been cancelled 😒

Oh that is not fun. The rain is so scarce here, but the heat prohibits us from playing that much. The weather is a funny thing right. I hope you can get out there soon!

Our course was closed today, but I played a different course and it was great to just get out. I need my weekly golf fix!

Same here! Even though I get my weekly golf fix only monthly. Which is very sad. 🤣

Golf, one sports I admire but it often appears to be a sport majorly for oldies...lol

...and beat me by 3 shots and 10 shots respectively

Looks like it wasn't your day but at least, you got to flex your muscle.

You can never go wrong engaging in sport activities as sport hangouts are often exciting and fun-filled.

Well, I guess I qaulify as an Oldie at this stage!! Even though I feel like a young fellow, my grey beard says otherwise! I have loved golf since I was around 14 though and pitch and putt before that..

Keep golfing and engaging in sports as it is always healthy; the grey hairs shouldn't be a barrier.

I hate anyone on the first tee watching me! Nothing worse. Once that shot is out of the way I relax

Ya fact! The first shot can be a dose and I still sometimes get nervous for it if it is a big comp or as you say if a load of lads are watching you. The worse thing was, we hit some balls at the range beforehand because of the frost delay, so I had no excuse really!

Why wasn't I invited?

You were invited! Did you not get the invite, I posted it out to you just after Christmas... :)

Golf has an amazing ability to bring friends together. I wish I was good at it. I used to always get asked by corporates to go for a round of golf or by mates to go for a beer and golf. We actually have some cool indoor golf simulators where I hosted my brothers bucks their and it was an amazing time. Food, drinks and virtual golf was a winner.

Ya golf is great for getting a gang of lads together and to be honest you don't have to be that good and everyone can get a handicap to try to make things fair. I think from next year I am going to start organising a yearly golfing holiday with the lads. Life is too short not to...

Those indoor simulators are class, they used to have one up in Dublin and it was the business - golf, pizzas and beer and guaranteed not to get wet!

Wow,so lovely photos and great to see the serene weather.
For a bit relaxation out there in the afternoon would be great time to spend.

I wish I could learn and play golf. Though the rules seem hard to me to understand.

Have a nice day, man!! 💯

I'd like to say there is nothing to it @asif7 but it is one sport that you need to practice a lot to get better at, but it's a really enjoyable sport and one you can play competitively into your 80s because of the handicap system.

Brings back good memories when I used to play/hack and end up having drinks afterwards.

I guess adulthood has a way of changing us.

Ya big time man, they sometimes go hand in hand, depending on who you're playing with. If it is my brother in law, then it is every time! He loves a pint!

A pint of Guinness looked like the perfect ending! Catching up with old friends and combining it with sport is great. I love seeing old surfing buddys and paddling out together. Then its always a race to see who scores the first wave. Great post and although I'm not a golfer the course looks super nice!

⁹Ya definitely and surfing is another brilliant one to do with friends. I really need to organise a trip down to Lahinch to catch some waves with some friends 🏄‍♂️

It gets pretty cold in the water this time of year, so we usually head for for a nice warm lunch straight or even just a soup or a chowder to warm back up.
