A long lens is neccessary, of course, because you don't need to get too close to the deer. I see very often roe deer, but most times it is still too dark to take photos, because this lens needs much light that I can shoot hand hold.
I have seen this roebuck once again, but the next times I was there he didn't came out of the woods.
