Question
If you could choose to study one single thing, what is it and why? Explain in a post of 300+ words using photos you took personally where possible.
Answer
Well this one was tricky to answer, Astronomy and Astro Physics came to mind right off the bat, so too did sports phycology. Something else that came to mind is studying my own past, as in going back in the family tree as far as possible, to learn as much as possible about my ancestors. The idea for this post is to pick a single thing however, so I'll go with Astronomy and stick to the rules.
I am always mesmerised by a sky painted with stars and galaxies, and I find it enthralling to learn more about it.
The fact that you are viewing the past when you look at the sky due to the finite speed at which light can travel, that being 299,792,458 metres per second is so fascinating. Some stars you see there in the sky are gone, they've long since died and burnt all of their fuel, but the light which was emitted by that star is still traveling through the cosmos. Millions or even billions of years later, it lands on the back of your eye and gets carried by the optic nerve to your brain and you see a star or in essence the memory of long since burnt out star.
Other closer stars emitted their light at a time when dinosaurs still lurked and roamed the mountains and valleys of our planet Earth. Again, how cool is that!
Something else I love about astronomy is the insane calculations and coordination required to do things like land a Rover on Mars. For those that aren't aware Nasa have deployed five different automated vehicles called rovers to the surface of Mars, starting back in 1997. The engineering, calculations and intricate timing required is simply phenomenal.
We are Stardust. Have you ever heard that expression? Well guess what? It's true, all the elements that make up your body from Oxygen to Carbon and everything in between was forged in star's super nova. That's right you and everyone around you, everyone you know, everyone you love, everyone you see every day was made in the middle of a star. Again how cool is that?
I'd love to study Astronomy and learn even more about this fascinating subject. I'm an engineer by trade and studied engineering at university for four years but if I went back and was to study something again I reckon astronomy and astrophysics might be what I'd opt for.
