# 913 - Ships on Coins - Part 9

in LeoFinance4 years ago

I am very fond of ships on coins.

I know that many people share this fondness. I have a few coins depicting ships.

So, I will post a series called "Ships on Coins" and I will show all the coins that I have on this theme.

There will be no order of presentation or country of issue. As the coins are stored in several places, I will simply search on each place and publish those that I found.

The ninth is a 2001 CAD $20 "Marco Polo".

It weights 31.1g with 92.5% silver purity and Proof finish. Its mintage was 13,942 units and it issue's price was CAD 59.95.

The Royal Canadian Mint created a series called "Transportation on Land, Sea and Rail". They were the Canada's first sterling silver hologram cameo CAD $20 and were issued in 2000-2003. This series of twelve coins commemorates Canadian achievements in transportation. Each coin bears a holographic cameo of famous Canadian methods of transportation.

Built in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1851 by James Smith, the Marco Polo for a time was considered to be the fastest ship in the world and named the "Queen of the Seas". The Marco Polo beat the world record run from England to Australia by a full week and reached England from Canada in 15 days on her record breaking maiden voyage.

The reverse, designed by J. Franklin Wright and engraved by Stan Witten, shows the Marco Polo.

As a Canadian, you have certainly read about this ship and all her records...

Gosh... a sterling silver hologram cameo on a coin... then they progressed to doing entire coin holograms, LOL! the RCM knows how to get collectors hooked on wanting more and more!!!
I love that ship coin. If I were a collector like you, I too would be collecting ALL sorts of coins! I am not a collector because I cannot afford to! I am just an ordinary working girl, LOL!
Thanks for sharing, @ronavel, and congrats on an extensive coin. It is very inspiring 🥰🌺🤙

I have a few books about Canadian commemoratives and I can tell you that the total of my Canadian commemorative coins is not above 10% of all commemoratives issued by RCM...

Trains are another favorite subject of mine! @silvertop and myself used to have a model train store. We lived and breathed trains! It was awesome! I look forward to your posts! Take care friend!
