We will continue the series called "Canadian Wildlife".
The Royal Canadian Mint is known by its high quality work and the enormous number of commemorative coins issued each year. Among these commemoratives we find many, individual or in series, under the theme "wildlife".
Canada, with its vast lands and seas, is the home of a varied fauna and that will be showed in this series.
I will try to post land animals, sea animals and birds, in that order.
The eighteenth is a 2014 CAD $10 "Canada Goose".
This coin is in the series "O Canada Set Two", that shows the Canadian spirit through Canadian places, animals, institutions and customs.
It weights 15.87g with silver purity of 99.99% and Matte Proof finish. The mintage was 16,840 units. The issue price was CAD $39.95.
The Canada goose (Branta canadensis) is one of the country's most distinctive and iconic native waterfowl. This large migratory species, composed of a number of subspecies ranging in size from about one kilogram to as much as eight kilograms, is found across North America. The Canada goose is immediately recognizable with its long black neck, black head with white cheek markings, light-coloured chest, and muscular body. Within the species, a wide range of differences in colouration, size, vocalizations, and wingspan sets each subspecies apart.
Designed by Canadian artist Jean-Charles Daumas and engraved by Matt Bowen, the reverse presents an image of a Canada goose in its natural habitat, its wings outstretched in a stance expressing dominance or warning. Viewed from the back with its beautiful wings rendered in fine detail, the goose looks out across marshy waters, its long neck and graceful black head held high. It stands on its legs with its black-tipped white tail raised above the water. Marsh reeds dot the water on both sides of the goose and poke from the water's surface in the background.
