# 854 - Modern Commemoratives Half Dollars - Part 12

in LeoFinance4 years ago

Today we will continue the series "The Modern American Commemorative Half Dollars".

The info below comes mostly from: https://moderncommemoratives.com/

"The United States Modern Commemorative Coin program began in 1982. That year, the US Mint released commemorative half dollar coins to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. Since that date, commemorative coins have been issued nearly every year to celebrate famous American people, places, events, and institutions.

Each commemorative coin program is authorized under an Act of Congress. The Act typically specifies the subject to be commemorated, the denomination of coins to be issued, and the maximum authorized mintage for each. Additionally, most commemorative coin programs include surcharges added to the cost of each coin, which will be distributed to specified beneficiary organizations or fund projects that benefit the community."

They were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof finish.

They will be presented in the order they were minted, but only one of each design.

The twelfth is the PR70 DCAM 1995-S "Baseball".

"The 1995 Olympic Baseball Half Dollar was issued as one of two commemorative half dollar coins for the Atlanta XXVI Olympiad Summer Games. This was part of a larger two year program that included half dollars, silver dollars, and $5 gold coins."

PCGS graded 1,371 1995-S "Baseball", with 42 as PR70 DCAM. 118,087 1995-S "Baseball" were minted in San Francisco.

I bought this coin in 2013 for $300.00 and today's price is around $250.00. The issue price was $12.50.

The obverse design of the Baseball Half Dollar features a batter, catcher, and umpire. It was designed by Edgar Z. Steever.

The reverse of the coin features the symbol for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games in the center of a map.

This reverse design was created by T. James Ferrell and used for all of both Olympic half dollar commemoratives issued in 1995.

I used to be a huge baseball fan back in my younger years and followed the 'Big Red Machine' as it was my hometown baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds. Once I had a family, I didn't have so much time for the sport anymore, but I do remember the straight A tickets I used to get in high school for getting straight A's in all my classes. Thanks for the memory @ronavel and have a lovely day!

I think it is a good idea to distribute baseball or other sports tickets to the best students. Mainly if they love a specific sport.
