Scammers, can't live with them, can't live witho... No wait, just can't live them in this case. I recently started watching some shows that dealt with scammers. One about a Dutch guy that goes around the world investigating different scams he hears about from others. Even though it is an illegal act, it's quite fascinating to see how people use their creativity to lead gullible tourists to losing their money.
We have scammers all over the world, in different areas, different sectors, and in various forms. Even locally here in Suriname there are scams. Although I'm not really familiar with them. I wonder why that is though. Probably because locals can either smell the bs from a mile away and know what's up, or the scammers only bother trying it out with tourists.
I did hear from someone that they got scammed into paying more than 5 times the normal taxi fare, but that's a common one in most countries. Another one is that in some shady bars they sometimes add more items to the tab without the customers noticing.
Cryptocurrency scams and phishing attacks are also internationally common, or pretty much any scheme that has the purpose of financial gain through questionable means. Ponzi schemes come to mind. We've had quite a few of those too. These kinds of schemes are easier to pull with people that really need a way to make extra money. Lots of those in developing countries.
Scamming is an age old concept, and will probably never die, but rather just evolve with time and technology. It's up to us to be wary and adapt faster than it can.
