Instant messaging and digital distribution platform Discord has been talking with several potential buyers lately. Epic Games and Amazon were candidates to buy the successful company before, but it now seems Microsoft has the best papers.
The rumour goes that the tech company offers more than $10 billion dollar for taking over Discord.
Discord is a platform with 140 million monthly users and mage $130 million in revenue last year.
Despite that the platform isn't profitable.
This might have to do with the fact that the use of Discord is free. The only money they make now is from their monthly Nitro subscriptions.
Discord and Hive
Discord is a tool that is widely used by a lot of communities on Hive. Leofinance also has it's own Discord channel.
I'm curious what will happen if Microsoft really takes over Discord. It will make the power of one of the biggest tech companies bigger again. We've seen the same with Skype that was bought by Microsoft before, Facebook and Whatsapp and many more examples.
It's not always an improvement. And will we have to pay for using Discord in the future and what will they do with the data?
Maybe it's time to look at alternatives for Discord before the takeover takes place.
What do you think?
