As a child, life was simple. You may have played an imaginary game in which you mixed soil and water to create a dessert. The procedure was known as making a "mud pie.

There was no purchasing items we required. Our imagination was all we needed to turn our desires into reality.

I remember spending countless hours in the back yard with my friends digging up dirt. The contest involved making the best-looking mud pie, embellished with an assortment of items. Whatever we could locate was on the menu, such as small rocks and leaves. The key to winning was to creating more than one layer.

As an adult, I realized our difficulty was that we didn't use a binding agent to hold the dirt together. Clay dirt was hard to find in our area, and using mom's eggs was a nonstarter!

Once we did manage to complete our dessert, crumbling crayons on top was the easiest way to infuse color into our creations. But this practice incurred the wrath of my parents. Crayons were for school; not cooking.

Of course, the practice was popular before we could afford to purchase Play Doh.

Once we finished playing, mother would bake us the genuine pie we could eat.

Mississippi Mud Pie. I don't truly know if the dessert actually originated in Mississippi. I knew it as such and have always used this name. It's a favorite treat at family functions.

Don't let part of the name "Mud" fool you. The taste is absolutely the best thing you've ever put in your mouth. That is, if you like the various ingredients that comprise this delicious treat, especially chocolate.

It's not some new fad? No. In fact, the dessert reportedly rose to prominence during World War II when supplies were not plentiful. Homemakers prepared the dessert with whatever that was available in their pantry.

The pie is also known as Black Bottom Pie. The darkness in the dessert is from the dark bottom layer. The pie is thought by some to be of Southern origin, the "black bottom" representing the dark, swampy lowlands along the Mississippi River. Other sources have identified an origin in Louisiana or Oklahoma City in the early 1940s. 1

Numerous version exist. And no one particular way to prepare it is correct. The one item that is present in all versions is the bottom black crust.

I don't have an "official" recipe from my mother. In fact, in my last year of high school, our home caught fire. My parents lost all family documentation and heirlooms. My siblings and I lost all of our childhood photos and physical memories.

But I have located several online. One recipe I wanted to share is from Cook.Com.2 Enjoy.

Ingredients

1 3/4 c. flour
1 stick butter
3/4 c. chopped pecans
1 c. powdered sugar
8 oz. cream cheese

No necesitábamos comprar nada.

I remember my childhood days when we used to play with clay and water and make beautiful toys out of clay and then take them home and keep them.

Wasn't it so much fun to play in the mud and make mud pies, build mud castles, and other items? Childhood was the best. Brings back so many memories. Yes, we would let our mud pies dry in the sun too. Then we would pour water on them and start over.

Thanks for the memories. Take care.

Most welcome dear.

This made me remember when I was a kid. I could play with the mud from morning till night because I used to build so many things with it

Yep. It certainly was fun in those days. And we didn't mind getting all muddy in our hair, on our clothes and our bodies. No worries. Our mothers would take care of it. Those were the fun days when we had no responsibilities. Our minds were filled with playfulness.

I appreciate you stopping by. Another mud lover. How nice. Take care.

When I was a child, I imagined eating clouds, that the clouds could eat hahaha, I played with my grandfather's tools and imagined that they had life and history. They were characters that jumped through my grandmother's garden

Wow, how lovely eating clouds. Better than eating mud. The imagination of children were priceless during my era. Our economic status was low. didn't have television; mobile phones, internet, gaming systems, or expensive toys. Just plain 'ole imaginative fun.

Although, as an adult, I learned that people in certain parts of the world eat dirt. I believe it is clay dirt. And it's not a delicacy. It's a main staple.

Thanks so much for your visit and engagement. I appreciate the support. Take care and have a good rest of your week.

Hmm, this cake recipe is appetizing. Thank you for sharing, I'm trying to do it

I hope it turns outs well. My mother prepared it a different way. It was more dense, like a brownie pie almost.

It looks really good! TBH when you mentioned It's a southern thing, reminds me of this Youtube channel I was subscribing to that talked abou all things southern. Would love to try mud pie when I can 😊

I'm in the U.S. Gulf Coast region and loves everything Southern. That would be nice to try the recipe. I'm Type 1 Diabetic, so have to let that one slide. Let me know how it turns out. Looks like you're a busy Hivean stirring in many pots whipping up a recipe for Hive members' success.

You know, when I think about the things I did as a child, I would now detest playing for hours getting my hands dirty in the mud. Memories are interesting to say the least.

Thanks for your visit and lovely compliment. Take care, and have a good rest of your week.
