Raef glanced back at his village slowly disappearing in the distance. Another two miles, and the comfort of shade trees and misty coolness on his skin promised to aid in his journey. His first venture over the mountains, he could only hope the elders' description was intended more as a guide and not solely to ease his worries. He had searched his peers' faces. Steely eyes and folded arms squelched his rising fear. Not returning to claim one's passage loomed large as he visualized the jeers he would have to endure.

So, he focused on the wooded path along the route. But first, he must conquer the passage through the lowest part of the Nekota mountains.

Thoughts of his family the day before lingered. His mother, father, and four siblings could only send hugs and prayers to accompany the thirteen-year old on his journey to the small, but bustling market.

He began to hum as he watched the flamboyant plumage from unrecognizable birds follow his footsteps. He would have swung his arms had it not been for the heavy items his shoulders carried as barter.

Raef turned and continued his journey through the woods. Unfamiliar squawks, whistles, and roars cracking the soft wind replaced the fading cheers from friends.

The closer he trekked toward the mountains, he could feel the sultry weather shift. Ahead, grey covered the mountains as fog descended. His clothes soaked in the mist.

Slowing his progress were the necessary pauses to alternate rubbing his sandals against each leg in an attempt to repel opportunistic mosquitoes.

Raef jerked his head as eerie sounds rushed from behind and both sides of the woods.

On the edge of the path to his right behind a tree, a gutteral growl intensified. He flinched, then searched the woods with wide eyes, blinking rapidly trying to locate the hidden danger.

Staring intently while quietly listening, he moved to the other side of the dirt path upon hearing twigs snap under the weight of a predator's stalking.

His undeveloped leg muscles tightened, ready to run. But should I? I'm not able yet to outrun any predator, he reasoned. Armed with only his sharp knife, he steadied quivering hands. Lowering his bundle to the ground, he turned, gripping the knife with white knuckles. He could not defend himself against more than one animal. But his one-on-one skills were above average.

His father's teaching rose up. Immediately, he bent, picked up a large stone, and threw it as hard as he could in the direction of the sound.

A loud yelp rang out from behind the tree as he heard leaves rustling and birds taking flight.

For another moment, he stood silently waiting. No other sounds, he retrieved his bundle and increased his pace. Although a cool breeze, beads of sweat dripped from his forehead after the encounter.

Another hour, he stood staring blankly at the bottom of the mountain.

Listening to others when younger, who had performed this solitary journey through the cave onto the other side, sounded exciting.

Now, he couldn't force himself to look beyond the fog. Let your mind and hands guide you through the caverns, they advised. He peeked behind him one last time. In his heart, he knew it would not be as easy as the elders and others boasted.

But turning back now would only bring disgrace upon his family.

rinreMr4T-dividerline-Resized.png

Dark and dreary it appeared as he poked his head inside while holding onto the slippery entrance wall. As if the mouth welcomed him, a slight rumbling from deep within trickled forward. Perhaps it was the water running along the floor. He did not want to assume any other creatures dwelt within.

Only one sandal to navigate the passage meant slow progress.

But it provided Raef the opportunity to discover the intricate designs depicting, flowing lines, carved figures, tools, animals, and nature. Who were these people that dwelt in the caves or beyond that left these images? he pondered.

Immediately he knew he would return. And that his younger brother would accompany him.

But for now, he focused on his family and his quest. They were depending upon him to honor his commitment to cross the mountain and return.

The musty odor and abundance of cobwebs caused Raef to keep is hands to his side. Any type of bites would probably be fatal.

Finally a blinding light revealed that the narrow, winding passage had opened into a larger area as Raef could see the end of the tunnel. He quickened his pace knowing he had conquered this part of his journey.

The cave was not as scary as he had imagined. He breathed deeply as he stepped on the lower ledge that led to the outside of the cave and directly into another wooded forest. This time, he could see a clearing as the road continued on.

Noise filtered toward him as people of all ages headed in a common direction about a mile ahead.

The market. His family described it as small. But to Raef, it was huge.

He stood in the middle of the road. Hundreds of people it seemed gathered in that one place. Straw huts similar to those in his caravan lined the road on both sides. Camels, wagons, wheels, baskets of fruits, vegetables, and dried meats just sat there next to the huts.

His first and most difficult task was locating water. Once he found someone willing to trade, he would return after securing other supplies.

Placing his bundle down beside him, he reached inside his pocket for the few coins. A passerby brushed against his arm. As he turned, he noticed his bundle missing.

Raef panicked. His eyes widened as his chest tightened. He reached out, but a sensation of the scene moving too quickly caught him off guard as his bundle disappeared into the crowd ahead.

Images of failing and disappointing his parents flashed through the mind. He was too old to have allowed imself to be robbed. Hia friends would ridicule him, he thought.

His nostrils flared as he bolted into action. He discarded the other sandle, and with feet running faster than he thought he ever could, he overtook the young thief as they both fell to the ground.

Raef looked up and was standing directly in front of man so tall that he could not immediately see his face. The man helped Raef upright and handed him his package.

"Young man, I see you have been robbed. I am the authority in this place. I watch out for those who would bring a bad reputation to this peaceful market. Here is your bundle. Be careful while here and on your return. Never let your items out of your sight. Remember this."

Relief spread across Raef's face. He nodded profusely, bowed, then thanked the older gentleman. The man asked what was the purpose of his visit. He directed Raef to the vendor he stated would give a reasonable price or be willing to barter. His help saved Raef hours of visiting each stall.

He was now tired, weak, and hungry. He purchased a small bun and slice of dried meat.

After securing seed, bread, and a small cache of water, he took a small sip of water from the bag, then rested.

It would have been nice if the tribe leader would have offered his camel. But the experiences he encountered on foot would last a lifetime. Looking toward the hill, he flashed a weary smile. He was now officially an adult.

As the evening sun approached, he gathered his bundle. This time heavier with the cache of water, Raef didn't mind. He had enough coins left to purchase a larger sack for his supplies. It would be easier than the stick over his shoulder.

This time, he looked over the distance toward the mountain. The cave beckoned him to hurry and enter so that he could cross the other side and head home. Of his success, he was certain.

The larger, clean abandoned hut owned behind by the last tribesman, who set out on the same quest but never returned, would now belong to Raef's family.

He smiled at the events of this day. He had already thought about the many stories he would tell those who had not ventured into the mountain.

The frightening rite of passage to adulthood! What an interesting read. Raef is a courageous and resilient boy and I'm glad he made his family proud at last despite the hurdles he faced. Your vivid descriptions of the scenes puts me right in the story and I felt Raef's doubts, fear and eventual success. Beautifully written! Take care and have a great day. !PIMP 😊

Yes, @kemmyb. It is frightening and a lot to place upon a thirteen year old. Some societies the journey is even dangerous just to prove a young man's worth. Raef's courage in undertaking the quest for his family's security is admirable. I feel that the obstacles he faced and lessons he learned along the way and at the market prepared him for adulthood. I also feel he was successful in his return home having tackled his fear of the cave and mountain.

I hope that his other sandal is waiting for him in the vicinity where it slipped from his foot.

I'm pleased that my descriptive narratives helped guide you through the scenes as though you were there urging him on. For some reason, I can picture you locating a larger rock and handing it to him to throw into the trees to chase off the predator. I'm laughing right now!

You are the epitome of a commentator, and I appreciate every word you bring to analyze my stories.

Take care and have a good rest of your week.

😄 At the point where the guttural growl got loud, I thought, what in the blazes! It's not enough the poor boy has to go through the quiet, misty mountain alone with the eerie noises while repelling the mosquitoes, now a wild animal had to add it's fear in the mix! Hehe. But really, you portray reality through Raef's journey. There are many children out there prematurely 'forced' into adulthood due to the hardships life deals them. Thankfully Raef scales through it all.

I hope so too @ekavieka that Raef can return home safely. He is confident, so he must may be able to. He certainly had an adventure going to the market and while there. Having help along the way is a good thing as there are certainly still good people in the world even though he was robbed.

He had to make the trip to prove his coming of adulthood in his tribe. And for his family to receive a newer and larger home. All the could think about was accomplishing his task for his family, not of himself. An admirable quality in a teenager.

Thanks so much for your visit and engagement. I appreciate it and your support. Take care.

Robbery can be very scary and painful but kudos to him. He acted like a man. He's a brave one!

Hello @rafzat. Yes, Raef was a brave young man of thirteen. Were it not for his father's teachings and his self composure, he would probably not have reached the market. His journey was one that was dangerous for a boy his age, yet he did not hesitate to undertake it for his family's sake.

I appreciate your visit and engagement. Take care.

Hello @rafzat. Yes, robbery can be scary. Fortunately, there was someone at the market who saw the incident and helped him avoid a complete loss of his items. It was a good thing Raef didn't have his money in the bag.

He was a brave young man to undertake the journey in the first place. He did so for his family. I was pleased how his venture turned out.

Thanks for your visit and engagement.

Great and interesting story. A person has to fight this battle of life alone and has to work hard to make his life. He has to spend a lot of time and think.

Yes, my character Raef does, @djbravo. It's part of their culture on becoming an adult that they have to brave the elements and make a trip to the market through the cave and return. Since Raef is going on the journey for his family a larger hut to live in, he is determined. I feel he will return unharmed.

Thanks so much for your visit. I appreciate it and your engagement.

Take care.
