The road shimmered in the sun's heat. Tiny specks of gray dust danced in the shaft of afternoon sunlight that twirled across the asphalt.

The thick cloud of dust filled with raging black boulder-shaped objects materialized quickly, then catapulted down the hill. Tons of rocks exploded as they landed with a fierceness that tore open the road. Sensing they missed the target, the rocks turned, gathered strength, and rolled faster in Jeremy's direction.

A frightful glance over his left shoulder confirmed that he couldn't retreat. The path was now blocked.

His only choice was to keep moving forward in hopes he could outrun the rocks hurling down upon him like an avalanche.

But the car wouldn't turn over. First thought was the alternator. No time to investigate under the hood. A pile of boulders were heading his way.

Abandoning the vehicle, he threw the keys on the seat. That was stupid, he quickly realized, so he ran back to retrieve them. Hot to the touch, he pulled off his jacket and opened the car door. If he survived this catastrophe, he would need his house keys.

He was wasting precious time. He had to get to the other side of the road.

His future waited.

Jeremy stared ahead. He could still feel the lingering touch of Brandy's lips as her perfume evaded his nostrils. The round curves of her hips melted in his hands. And her soft flesh

Sweat poured down his face as he pushed his soot-filled hair back from his forehead. Pounding in his temples as well as his chest spurred him into action as the sun beat down hard.

His mind set, he began to run as fast as he could to the other side to safety. To where he had sent Brandy ahead out of danger from the avalanche.

But something was terribly wrong. He was a sprinter, so why weren't his legs moving as fast as he'd trained? Then, his knees buckled. There was no way he could reach the other end of the road.

Flinging his head to the side, his chest heaved one final time as he leaped forward.

The divide stretched wider the closer he moved toward the other wide of the road. His legs were long. The pothole waited, in no rush to accept his miscalculation. The rush of white powder resembling a massive cloud was gaining ground, threatening to overtake him.

Adrenaline coursed through his veins.

Brandy Nichols stood on the other side of the divide. Smoke and flames jetted up from the open hole in the pavement in front of her.

Jeremy could no longer see her face. He shouted her name. No answer.

Thoughts swirled as he remembered the message on his answering machine. The results of the tests. His son probably growing to adulthood without a father.

But he couldn't think of his medical condition. He needed his heart that day to perform as if it were his last. He would deal with the stress later. So, he prayed.

Was this a dream? Surely, Brandy heard me shouting. Why didn't she move to help me? His jumbled thoughts would not settle down.

He couldn't afford to waste time doubting the love of his life. The pothole was growing wider as he approached. It may just as well have been atop the freeway. He was sinking lower with each step.

Falling forward into the pothole, the broken pavement slapped the side of his face.

Tires on other cars rolled past him attempting to avoid the hole, but falling off the road.

As the ashes rolled past her, Brandy stood there in silence, dusting off the particles and pulling tight against her voluptuous figure the expensive designer jacket Jeremy gifted her.

She accepted the gift with glee then promptly advised him of her decision to move on with her life without him being part of it.

Was he chasing a dream? She accompanied him on this trip. She snuggled close to him as they drove and sang lyrics to their favorite tunes. And he did send her to safety, jeopardizing his own life.

Jeremy reached out his hand, almost touching hers. Looking up directly into her face, he froze at the laughter on her lips as she pulled her hand back.

Tears flowed from the acknowledgment as a thousand signals coupled with body language and gestures these past two years flooded before his eyes.

The hot pavement blistered his palms as he dug deeper into the cracks filled with black tar and loose gravel.

His muscles weakened as he tried to hang on.

Their eyes locked momentarily. A faint twist of Brandy's lips allowed a smirk to escape. Its meaning spread clear across her face like the shadows now covering the ground underneath her feet.

He loosened his grip and allowed the ground to become his salvation.

No obtuvo respuesta.

Seguramente, Brandy me oyó gritar.

Wow, that was a gripping story! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I felt Jeremy's fear and desperation as he tried to outrun the avalanche, and I was heartbroken when he realized that Brandy had never loved him.

The writing was excellent. You did a great job of creating a sense of urgency and suspense. The dialogue was natural and believable, and the descriptions were vivid.

I especially liked the way you ended the story. It was a powerful and unexpected twist that left me feeling shaken.

Hello @malos10. Thank you so much for visiting. I appreciate your kind compliment. I'm pleased you liked the progression of my story from beginning to end. My aim is to always build tension and disclose characters' strengths and weaknesses.

Yes, Jeremy experienced an urgency when he realized his life would probably end. But finding out the love of his life didn't return his feelings was devastating. It's not often one wants to give up on life.

In the end, he felt he made the best choice for his life.

I appreciate your support of my story. Take care and have a good rest of your week.

Hmm
I guess I should say that this is true love...
It is rare to find its kind in my part of the world in these days

Hello @rafzat. You think true love is lost forever? Perhaps not. There is hope. Why do you feel this?

Take care.

Your pictures today are so special and it's so nice to see because you put so much effort into putting them together to make a beautiful picture.

Thanks so much @djbravo for stopping by and leaving such a lovely compliment. I'm pleased you liked my generative art I created. Once the design was completed, a story rose. I thought it work perfectly with the avalanche in the image.

I appreciate your support as always. Take care.
