"Red next to yellow, kill a fellow; red next to black, friend to Jack." Monica smiled widely while repeating the aphorism her dad taught her.

"Really? Never heard of that!" Matthew leaned his head sideways and pursed his lips.

Matthew loved animals. However, volunteering ten hours a week at the rescue ranch didn't involve interaction with snakes of any kind. Didn't matter the color, he thought. She was not going to cajole him to participate in the upcoming event at the ranch, even for charity's sake.

The sprawling twenty-five acre ranch was a haven for injured and abandoned animals of all species that were cared for before being released or move to other facilities. Her enjoyed being a part of the project, feeling he made a difference.

Leaning over, he fluffed straw, then cleaned the cages. It was hard, manual work. But he didn't mind. There, he met Dozer, his lifelong pit bull, whom he adopted.

His shift finished, proceeded to the employees' area to refresh before completing his time card.

It was the weekend. He opted not to include Monica. Enough of the unique qualities of reptiles. He desired the company of friends with more diverse interests.

It didn't work. Invariably, the conversation turned to the fascinating animal sanctuary while attempting to enjoy his ale. Of particular interest were the retelling of stories Monica often mentioned related to the invading reptile species smuggled into the U.S., then left in areas that proved dangerous to humans and animals.

Two months later while working his shift, a shrill sound penetrated the entire compound. Unaware of the reason, he ran from the bird sanctuary. Meeting him midway, Monica grabbed his shirt to prevent him entering into the reptile area.

Her words were inaudible, but Matthew heard the only one that mattered. Reptile. He froze.

"Are you listening? Secure the parameter leading to the birds and other small animals. Alert the others. This one is huge...and venomous."

Security procedures in place, Matthew remained with the bird sanctuary. Before he left work, Monica reported that the escaping culprit had yet to be located.

Elated it was Friday, Matthew drove home not far from the ranch enjoying loud music, but with a scowl and questions covering his face. Had the reptile escaped from the confines of the compound?

That night, he settled in with a six pack and his friend Nathan. Wresting, capped off with an action thriller were on the cable watch for the night. Dozer lay next to the couch, uninterested in both. He waited patiently for two slices of sausage pizza.

Nathan left Matthew and Dozer still relaxing.

Searching through the menu, Matthew sighed. Should be more exciting entertainment on Friday night, he sighed. Both readied for bed.

Matthew promised to call Monica the next morning to check on the missing reptile.

It was Dozier's continuous growl, then loud bark that woke Matthew. Howling wind battered the window as lightning flashed, illuminating his bedroom. He threw back the comforter, then rushed over and grabbed the curtain.

"We’re in for a rough night, don't you think, Dozer?" Behind him, Dozer stood close to his leg, tail straight, barking several times.

As he closed the window, a flash of light revealed the outline of a long, thick colored branch lying in the garden outside his bedroom window. Following the object from one end to the other, his hands trembled as red eyes affixed to the end of the branch winked and a smooth, curved mouth opened wide and hissing and sneering in his direction.

Matthew shook his head violently. This is not a dream, he repeated internally. He hurriedly closed the curtain.

Barefoot, he backpeddled to bed. Turning, he dove in under the cover. This time, Dozer joined him at the foot, his watching the window intently.

But he couldn't sleep. Watching his gentle bulldog, he smiled, remembering their first meeting. He could tell that Dozier felt it was love at first site as he did. Dozer needed a stable, pet-friendly home, and Matthew needed a companion.

Staring at the ceiling. He smiled, thinking, this time next year, they would have a roommate. He turned over on his side.

The next moment, he was planting kisses on his fiance's face as he pulled her close inside the opened the door. She returned his affection, planting a long, passionate one on his mouth.

As she drove her tongue deep within, reptilian features replaced her small, round delicate face with azure eyes and a dimpled smile. Horrified, his hands flew up and tore at her face. Futile. His body grew taunt, his finance's body grew in height to over ten feet with corresponding fangs. He struggled for release. But he was of no consequence. A mouse in a giant mousetrap. And her fangs were deadly and venomous. Red eyes attached to a monster mouth laughed as he struggled for release.

Immediately, he could feel the snake's lower body wrap around his legs, then slither up toward his torso, all the while squeezing his rib cage.

A weak scream produced no response. His head was now partially inside the reptile's mouth. I must not give in, he thought, his chest pounding in his ears. While still standing, he attempted to maneuver slightly toward the fireplace. If only he could free his arms, tools were within reach. Instead, heavy breathing racked his chest. Bites opened wounds that ingested venom.

Matthew's body, now dizzy with weakness in his legs and knees, fell limp. Any chance for survival would be slim. But he couldn't surrender. He had dreamed of this moment for many years. His escape plan was embedded in his soul. Now, the details were skewed. The timing and place were not ordered.

The only new element was Dozer.

The rain continued to pelt the front door as they both fell to the floor. He could hear Dozer in the background.

Horrified, Matthew glanced down. The reptile's tail thrashed back and forth with no relief from the bulldog. Dozier's head jerked from side to side attempting to pull the snake away from his master.

The venom was taking effect. He couldn't stop it. His last thoughts were of his finance's deep blue eyes and his faithful companion.

Dozier peered into the darkness as red eyes slithered silently away from the house and across the lawn, into the nearby bushes.

Although tapering off, rain continued. Matthew lay drenched next to the garden in front of the house. Dozier looked back at the doorway, still open. He stood guarding his master, watchful, as if he had just fended off a terror.

It was this scene that a worried Monica happened upon an hour later. She locked up before having Matthew rushed to the hospital.

Sitting next to his bed, they both stared at each other, exchanging the most bizarre stories of what occurred the night before while it was storming.

"Do you remember what color?" she queried, with one hand vigorously attempting to suppress her response the moment the answer was forthcoming.

No funcionó.

Reptil. Se quedó paralizado.

"¿Me estás escuchando?

Nathan dejó a Matthew y Dozer aún relajados.

No podía detenerlo.

Whoa! That was intense. You are good at building tension and suspense. At first, I thought Matthew was having a bad dream because he saw the snake, went back to bed and did nothing about it. Dozier is an ever-loyal friend and helps his master the best way he can.

The question Monica asks Matthew at the end gives me the impression that there's some symbolism attached to the snake's colour or does it have to do with knowing how poisonous it is? A very intriguing story. I enjoyed reading. 😊Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day. !PIMP !LADY 💕

Hello @kemmyb. Thanks so much for your visit and kind compliment for my story. I'm pleased to be able to effectively build tension in my scenes leading up to Matthew's encounter with whatever he dreamed or experienced. Only he knows what truly happened that night.

Knowing the reptile escaped nearby could induce negative emotions.

Symbolism is also at work here as well as the color combination that indicates whether the reptile is dangerous. Dreaming about snakes can indicate a toxic person in one's life or a healing and/or positive sequence of events are about to occur.

I appreciate your thoughtful analysis of my story. Take care and have a good rest of your week.

I understand that they are enjoying the mood but why should they ignore seeing a snake and dealing with that?

Hello @rafzat. Thanks for your visit and engagement. Could you clarify your comment below. I'm not sure I understand who you are referring to as "they are enjoying":
