Rules are a set of instructions that guide people on how things should be done in a particular area. They tell us what should be done and what not to be done in a specific setting or time. Failure to follow these rules might lead to punishments, ranging from minor to severe, or sometimes none at all.
Should rules always be followed strictly? Generally, yes. Rules often originate from past experiences that might have led to or almost caused negative outcomes. For example, the rule against smoking at a filling station isn't arbitrary; it's there to prevent potentially catastrophic fires. While there might be exceptions to some rules, it's often safer to adhere to them.
However, rules are sometimes bound to be broken, and in such instances, safety should be the priority. Consider the rule of law, which typically guarantees freedom of movement and choice. What happens during a state of emergency? Aren't we then expected to stay within a safe zone provided by the government, seemingly against our usual freedoms? Often, breaking a rule becomes necessary if it's the safest way to minimize potential loss at that moment.
The reason these circumstances arise is due to differences in individual situations, malfunctions, and unforeseen disasters. Sometimes, events leave us bewildered about what went wrong. At such times, the focus shifts to securing what remains rather than dwelling on what has been lost. History is filled with examples, like a single gas leakage causing widespread destruction or natural disasters. Organizations often consider these possibilities, which is why the saying "for every rule there's always an exception" exists. And unfortunately, in every disaster, someone has to bear the loss.
Deciding when to deviate from a rule isn't a simple matter of thought. One must carefully consider all relevant situations, particularly those that hold significant weight at that moment. It shouldn't involve making pointless sacrifices, like my hypothetical example of impulsively acting on something that looks dangerous without assessing the broader consequences. The key is that if you choose to break a rule, it should be for a valid reason, ideally as the only safe way to resolve a problem. Breaking rules for selfish gain is ill-advised, as you might end up losing everything, including what you hold dear.
