Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa (Nausicaa of The Valley of the Wind)[my reaction/review]

in Movies & TV Shows4 years ago

I know this is such an old Ghibli anime, but as people say, it's "Old but gold." I have always been a fan of Ghibli anime. I remember watching Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro when I was still an elementary school kid. However, I have never watched Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind until this year.

Whenever I talk about Ghibli anime with my Japanese friends and students, it's always either Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. Recently though, two of my Japanese friends told me to watch Nausicaa. I asked one of them (my Japanese bestie) what he thinks about it, he told me that it'll worth my time although he also mentioned that one of his friends slept while watching it. Since he and I usually have the same taste in anime, I gave it a shot.

Nausicaa is a actually a princess from a small village which they call the Valley of the Wind. The story is set in a future where the earth is on the verge of destruction. Somehow, the land are infested by some kind of toxic plants. The largest infested area is what they call Toxic Jungle.

In the movie, people lived with pre-historic enormous Ohms, which resembles a giant insect with lots of eyes. Perhaps you can see it in the picture I shared above.

Despite being a princess, Nausicaa is so adventurous and curious. She frequents the toxic jungle and find interesting things to study. She has such a warm heart and lovely personality that she can calm even an enraged Ohm. Because of this she and the people in her village can live peacefully.

Nausicaa's village, however, is quite peaceful. The non-stop wind entering their valley is fresh and is not infested by whatever toxic there is in the Toxic Jungle. It's also facing the ocean, so somehow we can describe it as a perfect place to live during that time.

Other kingdoms are in constant war with each other, though. Some of them are plotting evil things and even plan to destroy the toxic jungle. One night, one of the war airships crashed into their village. Everything changed and it would only take a miracle to change the following consequences. Interested? Feel free to watch it! It's on Netflix! ^^

Above is the trailer of the said animated movie so you can have more idea on what it is about.

What Can I Say About It?

I consider this film as one of my favorite Ghibli animations. Somehow, it reflects various types of people and situations that are actually happening nowadays. There are those greedy people who are always hungry for power and wealth. There are also people who play it safe and just stick to others who he/she thinks he/she can benefit from. And there are also people with a genuine heart for others and the world.

I highly recommend this film as it's an eye-opener to many people. Somehow, it will teach us the right way to treat others, people, animal and other living creatures alike. It will also give us an idea of the consequences we might face if we choose to continue all the wrongdoings we're currently doing.

It's a story about friendship, trust and love... not just between humans. It's truly worth your time!

One More Thing!

I love Teto! I wonder if he's an ancestor of the pokemon Eevee since they really resemble each other. While watching the anime, I kept squealing every time Teto appears on screen. He's so adorably cute! I so want to have a Teto in my life. hahaha Well, we can liken Teto to our favorite pet in real life. He's like the best friend one could ever have!

I'll end my post here. I know Nausicaa is an old anime, but if you still haven't watched it, please do so. :) Thank you so much for checking out this post! Until next time! Have a fantastic day! (^^,)/

Sort:

I have seen every single film made by Ghibli studio and Nausicaa too. It's not technically a Ghibli film as Miyazaki made it before Ghibli was formed but hey, Miyazaki and Takahata are what makes the studio so yeah!

Nausicaa is actually one of my most favorite ghibli films. Maybe in Top 5 as well, others being Grave of the fireflies, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Whispers of the heart. If I choose another, I'd pick Only Yesterday as well.

I love Spirited Away and Whispers of the Heart, too! They're among my faves together with Nausicaa, Ponyo and Princess Mononoke... ☺

Thanks for the info!! 😊😊😊

I love Princess Mononoke and Ponyo as well.

I think the only Ghibli film I hated was Tales from Earthsea. I hated it when I didn't read the book. I hate it more now that I've read the book! 😂

I have seen everything by Miyazaki and a lot more and was wondering about Tales from Earthsea ( Netflix has done a good job finally buying some seriously good anime features ), reading all these negative reviews about it might actually make it worth watching haha. I can't be disappointed now ;<)

P.S. I love Grave of The Fireflies too, Ponyo is cute as is Totoro! I've seen Spirited Away 5 to 10 times, Nausicaa and Mononoke rock.

Totally different, but I love Akira too.

Love Akira as well. And Ghost in the shell. Along with the works of Satoshi Kon. Apart from Miyazaki and Takahata, he was the third Japanese animation master that moved my mind.

Do share your thoughts on Tales from Earthsea. :)

Same here. Satoshi Kon's work is pretty unique too. From Perfect Blue to Millennium Actress. Love them all!

I'll share my thoughts. Might watch it tonight, in fact.

P.S. There's a small chance though that I've already seen it and forgot about it haha!

@notacinephile I just finished watching Tales from Earthsea and had difficulty making it to the end.

Here's how I (dis)liked it:

By the way, are you on Letterboxd?

This is my profile:

I watched an awesome animated movie from France, yesterday. You might like it too. More info on my Letterboxd page.

P.S. I used to write movie reviews on Steemit ( before Hive ), 2 to 3 years ago but I didn't enjoy it any longer and started sharing my creative projects / personal stuff instead. If you're interested, you can scroll down on my Hive time line.

See you around!

Hi, sorry, I missed this reply, mistook the notification for the earlier one.

I have seen "I lost my body". It was beautiful. Especially I marvelled at the animation style and some of the perspective shots (when the hand was moving about, trying to get itself moving about) as they seemed very hard to achieve. The film itself has a nice, detached, cynical vibe to it. Quite enjoyable.

I've opened a letterboxd account a few months ago. And then added a bunch of films to it, whatever came to my mind but I don't really use the platform often. Mostly because I'm lazy and I've been reading a lot more now (as Werner Herzog insists that we do) and watching less. Also kinda pissed at some of the cinephiles there. My username probably says a lot.

Now when someone reminds me of the platform, I go there and add a couple of films and don't log in for 15 days. 😅

I've checked out your account. We got a lot of films in common. That's great to know. 😀

Anyway, here's mine - https://letterboxd.com/Ordet/

Cool that you've seen and liked that French animated movie.

I've been reading a lot more now (as Werner Herzog insists that we do) and watching less. Also kinda pissed at some of the cinephiles there. My username probably says a lot.

I read a lot too and always have - love the work of Herzog by the way, especially the films with Klaus Kinski ( ever watched the documentary about their love / hate relationship? ) - but I think that advice is meant for filmmakers. Do you ( plan to ) make movies too? I used to and back then watching movies felt different.

By the way, your letterboxd description made me laugh. I don't mind being called a cinephile ( as it literally means you love movies ) but don't like to be called a film snob, as once happened here on Discord. I'm not ashamed of sharing my knowledge about movies, I studied film after all but what you watch or like is up to you.

And yeah, we've got quite some favorites in common, I just tend to watch way less mainstream / blockbuster movies these days and if I do, I prefer the classics.

See you around!

I haven't watched that yet... hahaha xD And maybe I shouldn't... hahahaha
