Maybe it's because that trade isn't available in the vanilla version of Crystal, my friend : ) . I'm using a version that's meant to be a remaster, called Crystal Legacy.
oh, thought it was, although not sure as I played silver, but you trade a bellsprout for the onyx, no?
That's right mate, I traded it for a Bellsprout βπ at the beginning of the game.
