I better understand the phrase's use now in that context, as an American I understand several common words differently than English people use them. Cheers are what cheerleaders do in America, not a toast or tip of the hat, so my interpretation of your comment was through that distinctly American understanding of the word.
I do appreciate your understanding of that dynamic, and explanation why I interpreted your comment differently than you meant it.
