This is a moment where I can say "All is according to plan; the war is yet to finish"
I saw people throwing a fit and panicking all over the place due to the unethical activities of the potentially bribed exchanges. They locked up the stakes of their customers and used it for votes. I saw the silver lining of all of this hours ago when @yabapmatt was very close to having almost the same amount of votes as the exchange voted accounts. We just had to get some of the remaining lazy bums of the STEEM blockchain to vote for some witnesses. If we didn't do it now, we would become vulnerable to future attacks that can be far more malicious than this minor mess we have right now.
2 Down - 2 To Go
This is the exact type of thing I expected to see just a few hours ago and I'm happy to be looking at this. From what I know, you need to have 17 of the Top 20 Witnesses to have a version of STEEM accepted. If we can get two more people ahead, we will revert everything back to normal and the blockchain itself will have gotten far stronger as a result while also showing decentralized governance/DAO at work.
Keep Working - Keep Building
One think we seriously need is more decentralized infrastructure. @anyx is already using the SPS to fund the infrastructure services he provide for the STEEM blockchain. Please consider giving him a vote. We need to encourage and support these type of behavior that help to make STEEM more anti-fragile. Below is a list of RPC Nodes (taken from Keychain). Take a look and consider supporting the people behind.

Community Counts: A Letter To The Steem Community
From time to time, Huobi stakes user holdings to help block malicious activities and attacks on blockchain networks. Prior to this particular event, Steemit and Tron had reached out to seek our support.
However, this action is not final. It has always been our intention to return voting rights back to the community so they can make the final decision on what the network needs. Thus we have removed the vote and will always stand behind the decisions of our users.
At least one exchange is publicly responding beyond Twitter. If you don't own your keys, you don't own your crypto. There is nothing wrong with trading on exchanges. I'm a trader too. But the way the customer funds have been used is nothing short of irresponsible and a violation of trust. I would even suggest users to withdraw your STEEM from the exchanges that participated in this mess as a protest. They need to be taught a lesson in transparency and respecting customers. There is no need for staying away from exchanges for a lifetime. Just be loud enough for them to make changes.
