This is my entry for the secrest or organ playing contest, week 33. As I have been away for three weeks with no chance of playing the organ my fingers and feet are already a bit stiff. It's actually amazing how quickly one feels the effect of not playing regularly. Luckily, just as quickly the effect of regular practice is felt.
To get myself in practice mood again, I choose a composition for this week's contest that is as far outside my usual kind of music as you can possibly get. Michael Schütz published a volume called "20 Pop-Stücke für die Orgel", in English: 20 pop compositions for the organ. The organ is generally not the most typical instrument for pop and jazz. Schütz however, translates pop and jazz idiom very convincingly to the organ.
For someone like me, trained in classical and baroque music, it is not easy to play. The steady pulse, required to play this kind of music convincingly, often eludes me. I like to listen to it, but not to play it. That I do play it now, is probably recklessness caused by having been on vacation.
