I always knew Scottish men wore kilts, but in the photo if the fiddlers, both the woman and the man have them. So, was the kilt the thing that all Scots wore on their bottom half, male and female?

I love the shot of the border collie herding. I watched a video a while back about how we came to have the different dog breeds, and in one segment they highlighted some herding dogs that would go by command up into the mountain ranges where the sheep or goats would go and bring them down. It was an incredible sight to see!

“Female highland dress includes women's shoes, also called ghillies, that are tied in the same way but have thin soles for indoor wear and dancing. Traditionally, women and girls do not wear kilts but may wear ankle-length tartan skirts. A tartan sash or shawl may also be worn.

The bottom line on the kilt? There is only one kind of kilt, be it a man or woman wearing it, it is still a kilt. You know how we love to break tradition. When traveling, many Scots wear their kilts on formal nights or for dinner. The women have always worn ankle-length tartan skirts. I have no idea if it is us here in the States that are breaking tradition or it is common nowadays. Here they were, leaving the event. Notice the all the men have socks on. :)

Thanks for straightening that out for me. I had never really thought about it until I read your post. So the girls have brought the hem lines up from the ankle to just below the knee. By any chance did that happen around the time mini-skirts first were in vogue? ;)

Yes I do see all the socks, and I notice that the guy on the left's kilt is very pleated, and it looks the the lady on the right has some pleating, but the others in the picture don't appear pleated. Is there a reason for this too?

Actually, the others are pleated, but not in the same manner and most of the pleating is up front, I believe. The newer trend of short kilts is newer than that, but, these games are the only time I really see them. When I see them at a formal dining affair or a public event where the dress is formal, they are in the traditional, ankle-length tartan.

Kilts can be pleated either to the sett, so that the tartan pattern is preserved in the pleating, or else to the stripe so that the same vertical line is centered on each pleat. Traditionally civilian kilts were pleated to the sett, and military to the stripe. But ultimately it is a matter of taste.

You wouldn't believe the yardage used to make this happen!
