Nick Cave - Rainy Night in Soho
I know that I shared three Pogues tunes last week for Three Tune Tuesday, so sharing their songs again this week may seem a little bit over the top for some of you and that's fine. However, I was taken aback by some of the performances at Shane McGowan's funeral, which was well and truly a celebration of his life, rather than a sombre and sad affair. He went out the way he would have wanted to and it was beautiful.
The funeral mass took place on Friday at St Mary's of the Rosary Church in Nenagh, Co Tipperary. Some well known faces were there to pay their respects, including Nick Cave who was a very good friend of Shanes. Nick said:
“Shane was a true friend and the greatest songwriter of his generation. It's a very sad day”.
He continued to call Shane “incredibly kind”, “generous” and “pure” and “an extremely funny guy.” He added:
“I would say he’s sitting up there – within the whole historical context – as one of the great Irish songwriters. And one of the greatest songwriters in general. He always had something that I didn’t quite understand.”
He has performed this Pogues classic Rainy night in Soho before, but this performance was a gorgeous tribute from a friend to a friend.
Imelda May, Declan O'Rourke and Liam Ó Maonlaí - You're The One
I really enjoyed this version of You're the One by Imelda, Declan and Liam. Declan gets loads of airtime in our house, as we regularly play the beautiful song The Stars over Kinvara as we put our kids to bed.
It was another moving tribute to Shane and I think that you will enjoy listening along. Here is the link.
Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill - Fairytale of New York
It would take a stone heart not to be teary, yet joyous listening to the final song from the funeral, where Frames front man Glen Hansard and Irish singer song writer Lisa O'Neil sang the Pogues Christmas classic. Many friends of Shane took to the stage with Glen and Lisa and the cacophony of Irish musical instruments that comes in around 1 minute 20 seconds is something very very special.
Glen Hansard may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I think he did a great job here and I like that they used the real lyrics that Shane had written.
It was unusual to say the least to see people dancing at a funeral, but sure wasn't Shane different to the many and had his own ways of doing things, so in a way it was almost fitting that people were dancing around his coffin. I do think that he would have wanted this to be a celebration of his life and not a sad and sombre affair.
There was just something about seeing all of the bereaved smiling and happy listening to the song and the sendoff. I think Shane would have loved it and sure isn't that what it's all about at the end of the day.
Three Tune Tuesday
That's right, it's Tuesday folks and for our merry little band of ladies and lads, that means sharing tunes, good vibes and engagement. As another week disappears in the rearview mirror, we have loads of engagement and tunes flying around on Three Tune Tuesday and sure isn't that bloody fantastic! I hope you're ready to share three tunes from wherever you find yourself on this magical spinning lump of rock that we all call home and sure you might even sing us a tune if we're lucky?
It's a time of the week when lovers of music, tunes and craic bring their blockchain community three of their finest and brightest tunes to share and celebrate, so let's roll on and let the tunes flow free.
This is my 133rd week waxing lyrical for Three Tune Tuesday and we are still going strong.
It started off with me just sharing tunes into what seemed like a void, but little by little others joined and now I'm thrilled that we have a little corner of Hive where we come and share our tunes every Tuesday, and long may it continue. I almost stopped posting the songs and thoughts a few times, but I stuck with it and now interestingly it is my favorite thing about Hive. I love music and now I have a network of folks around the world who love music too and we share our tunes and catch up with each others tunes and discuss them each week. We get Pop, Metal, Rock, Gospel, Folk, Jazz, Rap, Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, Reggae, Bippy bappidy Flange Hop. Ok I made that one up, but you get the idea, we are all learning about new artists, bands, back stories and sure isn't it just mighty!
Something that excites me the most is that we even get musicians sharing their covers of famous songs and even their own songs from time to time here on #ThreeTuneTuesday, which is a real favorite of mine, as that takes talent, time and dedication.
We are adding New posters and retaining our core of regulars here on #TTT which is fantastic. Let's keep it growing. Weekly, I try to find four to six hours to listen to all of the fantastic music shared from like-minded folk from around the globe and interact with their posts. This has led me to genres I don't know well and to some amazing new bands and artists and has even introduced me to some musical instruments I did not know existed. It also allows me to upvote smaller accounts and find some really interesting people from all over the world, which is heartening.
