Rodríguez - Three Tune Tuesday - Song Recommendations Week 21 🗣🎶

This week I decided to go to my favorite self made playlist on spotify, hit shuffle and pick the first band or act that came up. I actually discovered this guy accidentally when searching for Rodrigo Y Gabriela. I played the first song Sugar Man and although it wasn't Rodrigo Y Gabriela, I liked what I heard and added them to my playlist.

So who is Rodríguez when he's at home then? Christened Sixto Diaz Rodriguez in 1942, he is an American singer-songwriter from Detroit in USA. He started out as "Rod Riguez" and released his first album in 1967. From 1970 he was known as "Rodríguez". He recorded two albums with Sussex records. The first one was Cold Fact and the follow up was Coming from Reality. He never gained much of a following at home in Detroit or America however in those early days. That recognition wouldn't come until much later.

His main fanbase was in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, but the sales were not enough to sustain him and he gave up music as a career in 1976. He lived out a simple life in his hometown of Detroit and then in 2012, the Sundance Film Festival hosted the premiere of a documentary film Searching for Sugar Man. It was directed by Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul and detailed the efforts of two South African fans who wanted to know rumors about Rodriguez dying were true. They were false, but then the two wanted to discover what had become of him. The documentary, produced by Simon Chinn and John Battsek, went on to win the World Cinema Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award.

Right, so now you have the back story, let's share some tunes. Time to rock on with Three Tuesday. For those unfamiliar with TTT or Three Tune Tuesday....

The jist is as follows

Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs which I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Or why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and hopefully upvote it. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music.

Here are the week twenty one recommendations for Three Tune Tuesday

** Drum roll please.....**

Rodríguez - Sugar Man

Predictable choice really, but it was the first song of his that I heard and is still my favourite. It seems to really capture him and his style.

Rodríguez - Cause

What a powerful song. Here's the lyrics:

Cause I lost my job two weeks before Christmas
And I talked to Jesus at the sewer
And the Pope said it was none of his God-damned business
While the rain drank champagne
My Estonian Archangel came and got me wasted
Cause the sweetest kiss I ever got is the one I've never tasted
Oh but they'll take their bonus pay to Molly McDonald,
Neon ladies, beauty is that which obeys, is bought or borrowed
Cause my heart's become a crooked hotel full of rumours
But it's I who pays the rent for these fingered-face out-of-tuners
and I make 16 solid half hour friendships every evening
Cause your queen of hearts who is half a stone
And likes to laugh alone is always threatening you with leaving
Oh but they play those token games on Willy Thompson
And give a medal to replace the son of Mrs. Annie Johnson
Cause they told me everybody's got to pay their dues
And I explained that I had overpaid them
So overdued I went to the company store
and the clerk there said that they had just been invaded
So I set sail in a teardrop and escaped beneath the doorsill
Cause the smell of her perfume echoes in my head still
Cause I see my people trying to drown the sun
In weekends of whiskey sours
Cause how many times can you wake up in this comic book and plant flowers?

Rodríguez - I wonder

Another track from 1970 album Cold Fact. I wonder how many of you guys have heard of Rodriguez. I suspect my South African friends like @edprivat and @rynow have heard of him, as he was apparently bigger in South Africa than Elvis, or so the rumour goes.

That's all she wrote

That's it for another week. Those are your three songs for week twenty one. Let me know what you think - good, bad or indifferent? Did you like them all or just one or two?

Also, as I said before, I love getting good steers for new tunes, so please tell me about the latest and greatest or obscure oldie brilliance below and I'll be sure to check em out.

Thanks as always for stopping by.

Peace Out
