It's true that nocturnal animals don't come out in the day but they can surface if threatened by a predator. It's likely "the guy" escaped from a predator and the smell of the apple fruits attracted it ... just my guess
Possibly, but we also found a compromised screen in one of our crawl space vents where we think he may have been residing. It's close to where we saw him; it's not the first time, presuming it was the same opossum! They all sort of look a bit alike, lol! He's more than welcome to hang out here.
