RE: Whispers From Outer Space

It reminds me of all the hype around declassifying information about Area 51. In fact there's been quite a bit about people wanting to know more about supernatural stuff happening across the world. Some of the stories get eerie but one line I remember hearing from an interview was something like "It might only happen once or twice but if it happens all across the world, the number of times is huge".

I wonder if there are already aliens on Earth but we can't communicate or they don't wish to communicate right now.

Sort:

There would be good reason not to communicate right now: Kindness. Any civilization that can get to Earth is at least minimum one hundred years technologically ahead. Imagine being an engineer on Earth knowing beyond any reasonable doubt that whatever it is you are working on some alien has already done it long ago and now it's being done even better. Why show up for work? The engineer would want to learn from another civilization to catch up and the engineer would lose out on the joy of figuring things out and having a "Eureka!" moment.. In the Star Trek franchise species don't have first contact until they are on the threshold of discovering warp drive. That's because at the point a species leaves their star system they'll start meeting more technologically advanced aliens anyway.

That's an interesting perspective. I do agree that it would be quite dangerous given the technological differences. We might just get wiped out just because they felt like it.

I doubt an alien species would travel all the way just to wipe out life on Earth. A species could just send a Berserker probe to do their genocide.

An alien species can give a message that would seem threatening. For example, in the 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still it shows electrical power around the world being shut off for a half hour. It shows multiple scenes of people in different countries astonished. Then it shows a meeting of U.S. government officials talking about the reports coming in. The average person knew an alien just turned off their power and that scared them. The government had a wider scope and knew that power was still working in situations where lives depended on it working like hospitals and planes in the air. It's scary for someone to turn all the power off. It's terrifying when someone has the control to pick and chose what gets electricity and what doesn't.

The message was given to draw attention to and demonstrate the seriousness of Earth's new role in the galaxy since Earth had achieved the rocket technology and atomic weapons to become a potential threat to other species.
