Happy Friday Eve everybody! Tomorrow is the day and for me, it not only means the end of a workweek, but also marks the last day until we see baby granddaughter Olivia! It’s been since just before Christmas when we last saw her. She started walking at 9 months and has already marked her 10th month birthday! How time does fly! We are SO looking forward to the visit!
My new coworker started today. I believe she’s going to be a good worker. She’s smart and despite all that I threw at her today, did very well! Here’s to her staying the course and learning my job!
We live in the Pacific Northwest and have some of the prettiest and diverse forests around, as you can see from my pictures. I asked ChatGPT for a synopsis of the area here’s what it had to say:
Since you live in Everson, you’re right on the edge of one of the most impressive forest ecosystems in North America. Here are some interesting facts about the forests around Everson:
🌲 They are part of a temperate rainforest
The forests in the Nooksack Valley and Mount Baker foothills receive abundant rainfall, allowing huge trees, thick mosses, ferns, and fungi to thrive. While not as wet as the Olympic rainforest, they’re still considered part of the Pacific Northwest temperate rainforest ecosystem.
🌲 Some trees are centuries old
Old-growth stands remain in parts of the nearby Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Western red cedars and Douglas-firs can live for 500–1,000 years under the right conditions.
🌲 The dominant trees around Everson
Common native trees include:
- Western red cedar
- Douglas-fir
- Western hemlock
- Pacific silver fir (higher elevations)
- Bigleaf maple
- Red alder
These species form layered forests that provide habitat for countless birds and mammals.
🦅 Wildlife is incredibly diverse
The forests around Everson support:
- Black bears
- Cougars
- Bobcats
- Roosevelt elk
- Black-tailed deer
- Northern flying squirrels
- Bald eagles
- Spotted owls in some protected habitats
Salmon returning to the Nooksack River also help nourish the forest ecosystem by bringing marine nutrients inland.
🌲 Mount Baker’s forests stretch to the Canadian border
The nearby Mount Baker Wilderness extends nearly to Canada and contains forests, glaciers, alpine meadows, and rugged peaks. The wilderness covers about 118,000 acres.
🌲 Moss grows almost everywhere
The damp climate around Everson allows mosses and lichens to blanket tree trunks, branches, and even power poles. Some branches become so covered that they resemble hanging gardens.
🌲 Forests help reduce flooding
The forests in the Nooksack watershed absorb rainfall, stabilize slopes, and slowly release water into streams. Forest management in the watershed is an important topic because it can affect flooding, water quality, and salmon habitat.
🌲 There are hidden old-growth groves near Mount Baker Highway
Beyond Glacier and near Nooksack Falls are areas containing massive old-growth trees that escaped historic logging. Some local hikers consider these groves among the most impressive forests in Whatcom County.
One fun fact: if you’ve ever driven east from Everson toward Deming and Glacier on Highway 542, you’ve traveled through a forest that gradually transitions from lowland cedar-hemlock forest into subalpine fir and mountain hemlock forests as you approach Mount Baker—almost like driving through several different ecosystems in a single afternoon.
I do love the forests and the sights within so much. It can be very relaxing. Based on aging trees I’ve done before, we’ve got some cedars over 500 years old on our property. They are absolutely huge both in height and trunk circumference! Quite amazing!
Enjoy more pictures!
Trees can often grow to accommodate whatever might be around them. Makes me wonder about this guy…..
That’s gonna be it for today. Take care and enjoy the rest of your day wherever you are! 🙏🌏🙏

BSB Revelation 22:18-21
I testify to everyone who hears the words of prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city, which are described in this book.
He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints.
Amen.
