They only come out at night! No- I’m not referring to the rock group The Edgar Winter Band, but to our little nocturnal adventure last night.
Keep in mind that we live on a somewhat secluded road in the foothills of the mountains. It’s around 9 PM last night and my phone rings. The caller ID said it was Jan our neighbor and hiking buddy. She said that these 2 men had come to her door asking for help. It seemed they’d gotten their car stuck at our neighbor across the road house and couldn’t get the car out. They asked if her husband could come try to help. He has a small tractor. So while he was getting ready to assist, she called asking if @silvertop could observe in the shadows just in case the situation wasn’t as it was being told.
He headed out. I soon joined him about the time Jan joined us. The neighbor’s driveway was closer to our property than hers. Jan had tried calling the sheriff’s department to get them out as well because the folks who own this property were out of town. Hmmmmm…..🧐
The sheriff’s department told Jan that they could do nothing until the property owner called them! Huh? 😳 So, I whipped out my phone to call the neighbor. In the course of that conversation, I decided to call 911 on @silvertop’s phone and try to be a go between. The 911 operator did not want to proceed that way, so I gave her my neighbor’s number. I figure because they couldn’t record the full conversation. Within 10+ minutes, a sheriff arrived. Five minutes later, a second officer came.
The story went like this. One of the men was heavy and the other slim, so I’ll refer to them accordingly so you know who is who. The officer questioned the heavy man first, asking several questions. The one question that became interesting was when he asked him who was driving. Next to that interview, the slim one had gravitated to @silvertop to talk. During that conversation, the slim man volunteered that the heavy man was driving. Meanwhile, the heavy man had said the slim one was. The officer had been listening to @silvertop’s conversation while talking with the heavy man, and asked him again, who was driving because he’d overheard the conversation. The heavy man said ‘I guess that’s on me’ and the officer asked him again-which was it?
My guess? One of them-maybe the slim man didn’t have a driver’s license or it was suspended. Long and short of it, after the interviews, the 2 officers, @silvertop, Jim and the slim guy were trying to push the car back onto the gravel. It didn’t work-they were seriously stuck!
To make matters worse, they had little money and a tow truck was going to be needed to get them out. Eventually, I approached the office and asked him if he planned to call the homeowner to give her the particulars. He didn’t have her contact info so I gave it. We eventually went home around 10:30.
This morning, my neighbor texted me what the officer told her. He was fairly certain they weren’t up to causing harm. They said that they were delivery drivers and were delivering a package from Temu to the residence. So I guess all’s well that ends well.
However, let me ask some questions; feel free to weigh in!
1- What delivery service delivers that late-9 PM+ and on a Saturday no less?
2- Why could they not agree who was driving?
3- There were packages in their car for ‘delivery’. Were they really or perhaps they were there because…..?
The driveway had definitive boundaries, yet they also claimed they thought it went on. Yes- it was dark however there’s a lot of outdoor lighting at this house, plus the headlights on the car.
I also figure the officers may have been restricted to a point because they weren’t on public property, but were off the road on private property. 🧐
To me, this all seems a bit odd-more than odd, really. I am happy that nobody got hurt-neither the men, @silvertop and Jim who tried to help, nor the officers. Things could have gone south quickly.
Just before going indoors, I took this picture of the sky at 10:29 PM.
That was our totally unusual Saturday evening adventure! Have a lovely week ahead!
Take care and enjoy the rest of your day wherever you are! 🙏🌏🙏
