Beni…….What?!…….My Actifit Report Card: October 24 2025

in Actifit18 hours ago (edited)

This is one of the Japanese Maple trees in the yard. We planted 3 some years ago because the first few falls had nothing but the mustard colored leaves, and having just moved from Colorado where the Aspens are golden-well we were having some withdrawals, lol! I could never remember the name of the tree except that it was a Beni something. I nick it the ‘Beni-ha-ha’ tree. It is really called Beni-maiko so named as Beni means ‘red’ and maiko is an apprentice geisha. The name was referencing an apprenticing geisha’s red silk kimono and how it flutters in the breeze.

I asked Grok about it and here’s what it had to say:

Botanical name: Acer palmatum ‘Beni-maiko’

Mature size: 4–6 ft tall × 3–5 ft wide (1.2–1.8 m × 0.9–1.5 m) after 10–15 years. Very slow-growing, ideal for small gardens, patios, or bonsai.

Growth habit: Dense, upright, twiggy shrub; naturally rounded with layered branches.

Leaf shape: Classic 5–7 lobed palmate leaves, deeply divided, serrated edges.

Seasonal Color Show

  1. Spring (the star season)
    • New leaves emerge intense scarlet-red to fire-engine red.
    • Each shoot looks like it’s been dipped in red ink; the brightest of any Japanese maple in spring.
  2. Late spring → early summer
    • Leaves transition to pinkish-red, then flame-orange with red veins.
  3. Summer
    • Settles into green with red margins and petioles; still attractive but subdued.
  4. Fall
    • Returns to bright red-orange before leaf drop.

Fun Facts
• Introduced in the 1980s from Japan; now one of the top-selling dwarf red maples worldwide.
• The intense spring color lasts 3–4 weeks—longer in cooler climates.
• Leaves are smaller and more delicate than most cultivars, giving a fine-textured look.

This one actually lost half of the tree-possibly to winter kill one year, but it’s made a stunning comeback and this year, it’s the prettiest I’ve ever seen it!

Enjoy the pictures!

So pretty!

Work was busy today, but all’s well that ends well! I’m glad it’s done! 😎👍 TGIF!!

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Thank you @benthomaswwd! This is one of three; the other two are comprised of a Bloodgood, which gets much taller and a dwarf like lacy leafed one. Neither of those have shown their color yet, but when they do, I will try to capture them as well.

Thanks for stopping by. Take care and enjoy the weekend! !LADY
