I believe you can’t spy a sunflower without getting a little ‘happy’ from seeing one! What’s not to like as they are in brilliant shades of yellow to burnt umber to delicate pale cream! They provide food for both wildlife and humans alike! I’ve never seen a field of them but I can just imagine the delight that would bring one!
There are many varieties and colors as well as heights-from 18” to well over 10’ tall! The first two pictures are of a variety that grows wild here.
All of that sunny yellow-it just shouts of joy!
Bees 🐝 like ‘em!
I asked GROK about them and here’s what it had to say:
Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are vibrant, annual plants native to North America, known for their large, bright yellow flower heads that resemble the sun. Here’s a concise overview:
• Appearance: Sunflowers typically grow 6–12 feet tall, though dwarf varieties reach 1–3 feet. Their flower heads, often 8–12 inches wide, consist of golden petals surrounding a dark brown or black center filled with seeds. The leaves are broad, heart-shaped, and rough-textured.
• Heliotropism: Young sunflowers exhibit heliotropism, meaning they track the sun’s movement across the sky from east to west during the day to maximize photosynthesis. Mature flowers usually face east.
• Growth and Care: They thrive in full sun, well-drained soil, and moderate water. Sunflowers are drought-tolerant and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. They grow quickly, blooming in 70–100 days from seed.
• Uses:
• Seeds: Edible, rich in vitamin E, magnesium, and healthy fats; used for snacks, oil, or bird feed.
• Ornamental: Popular in gardens and as cut flowers due to their striking appearance.
• Agriculture: Grown commercially for oil, seeds, and silage. They also help in phytoremediation, extracting toxins from soil.
• Cultural Significance: Sunflowers symbolize positivity, loyalty, and vitality in many cultures. They’re the national flower of Ukraine, representing peace and resilience, and are famously depicted in Vincent van Gogh’s paintings.
• Fun Facts:
• The tallest sunflower recorded was 30 feet, 1 inch, grown in Germany in 2014.
• Each flower head can contain 1,000–2,000 seeds arranged in a spiral pattern following the Fibonacci sequence.
• Native Americans domesticated sunflowers over 4,000 years ago for food and dye.
Can you imagine one 30 feet tall?! 😳 It must have been a sight to behold!
As fall approaches and crops get ready to be harvested, you can count on sunflowers to be part of the end of summer landscape. I’m just waiting for it because not only are the sunflowers at their peak, pumpkins will begin to appear as well. As some may know, I have a ‘thing’ for pumpkins! 🎃
That’s it for this Friday Eve! Tomorrow’s looking to be a super busy day at work. I’ll be ever so glad when the day is done for sure!! Take care and enjoy the rest of your day wherever you are! 🙏🌏🙏

NKJV John 5:34-30
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
