Blue Moon Belgian Beer for Beer Saturday

Belgians and their Beer

You've got to hand it to the Belgians. When it comes to beer, they are the masters. So many tasty beers. Blue Moon is no different and when a friend called to the house the other day and gifted me 4 cans, I was a happy boy.

For those not familiar with this beer, a quick search helps me explain that Blue Moon is a Belgian-style wheat ale that was first introduced in 1995 by brewer Keith Villa at the Coors Field Brewery, a small experimental brewery located inside the baseball stadium. Pretty interesting. If I'm honest, I'd have guessed it was much older than that.

It turns out Villa, who had a PhD in brewing science, was inspired by traditional Belgian witbiers and wanted to create a more approachable, slightly sweeter version for American drinkers. The beer was originally called “Bellyslide Belgian White,” but it was later rebranded as Blue Moon, referencing the idea of something rare and special. Ha ha. I wished they kept the original name, Bellyslide Belgian White is pure funny!

It didn't take long for it to take off and it quickly gained popularity, especially when served with an orange slice to enhance its citrus notes, although I didn't do this with my 4 pack, it's a serving style that has become one of its trademarks.

Although it began as a craft-style experiment, Blue Moon is owned by Molson Coors Beverage Company, which helped scale its production and distribution across the United States and beyond. Having a large corporation and marketing machine behind you with an experienced and vast production and distribution network helped it gain popularity.

Over time, Blue Moon has played a significant role in introducing many drinkers to wheat beers and expanding the market for Belgian-inspired brews in North America.

We had a few birthday parties in the house over the weekend with thirty kids between ten and thirteen running amok.

They got a massive bouncy castle which did a great job of entertaining them for hours on end, but it was still a busy day, so when the bouncy castle came down and all the kids went home, it was nice to enjoy a few of thes3 bad boys.

To be fair to Blue Moon, there was plenty of competition from Guinness, Moretti and Hazy Jane, so it did well to make the draft, if you'll excuse the pun!

I still remember the first time I had Blue Moon. It was pretty amazing. It's so common here in the US now. You can get it pretty much everywhere. If you like Blue Moon you really need to try and get your hands on some Oberon from Bell's Brewing sometime. It's so good!
