Kinnegar Scraggy Bay IPA for Beer Saturday

Another IPA

It's hard to beat a nice cold IPA on a warm Summer's day.

As ye well know, I do love my pints of Guinness, but when the sun shines IPA or a pint bottle of Bulmers with ice wins out and that's what happened this time.

I always like to give credit where it's due and it's due here to this Galway restaurant. Not only was my IPA icy cold, but the pint glass they served it to me in was also icy cold, which is serious service in my opinion. It's the little things that make the difference. These extra touches differentiate the best from the also rans.

So I had excellent service and an extra cold glass, but would it matter if the beer was only average? Fear not though, the beer was top drawer. Kinnegar a small Irish Farmhouse brewery makes top quality IPAs and Scraggy Bay is no different. It's smooth and velvety and most importantly for me, hoppy.

The food was also excellent. The kids loved their pizza and I had the Chicken Arabiata which was delicious as always. Italian food done well can be so good. It's simple but with the touch of a good chef, it can be transformed into great food.

Let's finish out with another look at this lovely beer and frosted glass and hear a little about Kinnegar Brewery.

About Kinegar

I asked Chat GPT to help with this bit. Why reinvent the wheel?

Kinnegar Brewing is a craft brewery founded in 2011 by Rick LeVert and Libby Carton in Rathmullan, County Donegal, taking its name from the nearby Kinnegar Beach. Since 2017, brewing has taken place in its modern “K2” facility in nearby Letterkenny, where they operate a 35 HL brewhouse alongside their original 10 HL kit. Embracing a farmhouse ethos, Kinnegar produces unfiltered, unpasteurised beers that are naturally carbonated through traditional spunding during fermentation—all bottled, canned, and kegged on-site.

The brewery boasts a vibrant Phunk Farm project in its original Rathmullan location, dedicated to experimental and spontaneous fermentations, showcasing their innovative spirit.

Kinnegar has quickly earned a reputation for high-quality, flavourful beers that reflect both local character and global craft standards. Its flagship IPA Scraggy Bay earned Ireland’s first-ever European Beer Star gold, while Black Bucket, a black rye IPA, became the first Irish beer to claim gold at the 2022 World Beer Cup, elevating Ireland to the top winning nation in that competition.

With a taproom at K2 where visitors can enjoy brewery tours, on-site only brews, food trucks, seasonal events, and regular live music sessions, Kinnegar has become a must-visit destination on the Wild Atlantic Way. A favourite among locals and tourists alike, it’s praised online for its citrusy, balanced IPAs (Scraggy Bay) and rich farmhouse ales (e.g. Rustbucket and Devil’s Backbone)

I would like to try Kinneger. Usually, small breweries have the best beer. A friend just poured me a beer with lemon, elderberry and mint. I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical, but it was a very good lager. It wasn't a classic radler, a little stronger, it had bitterness, but you could feel a little acid of the lemon and the flavors of mint and elderberry. Really refreshing. I didn't take a picture, but when I come across that beer I'll take a picture of it. Unfortunately it wasn't in an ice glass. Have a nice Saturday

I think you'd like it tbh. They really do make great beers. Like you I enjoy the smaller breweries most in terms of flavour and I like to give small businesses my business

That beer sounds interesting and I always like to try interesting beers, though sometimes it will be the one and only time drinking it!

Lovely warm comment. Thanks for taking the time. It was indeed a delicious meal and beer. I find IPAs especially can accompany food well like a wine, moreso than standard beers 🍻 !BEER
