Escarabajo Esmeralda
This drawing is part of the BUG DRAWING CHALLENGE I’ve been doing these days, and I hope you enjoy it. It’s a top-down view of an emerald beetle, created entirely digitally using watercolor brushes in Ibis Paint. The piece is inspired by nature and the symmetrical shapes of insects, as well as their bright colors, which is what I love most about them. I share the original post info from the challenge, and this is a drawing I made with lots of love since I always enjoy painting with digital watercolors, and I’ve drawn insects with this technique before. Here’s part of the drawing process I’d like to share with you.
Este dibujo forma parte del RETO DE DIBUJAR BICHOS que estoy haciendo durante estos días, y espero que lo disfruten. Es una vista cenital de un escarabajo esmeralda, realizado completamente en digital con pinceles de acuarela y utilizando Ibis Paint. La obra está inspirada en la naturaleza y en la forma simétrica de los insectos, así como en sus colores brillantes, que es lo que más me gusta de ellos. Comparto la información de la publicación original del reto, y este es un dibujo que realicé con mucho cariño, ya que siempre disfruto de dibujar con acuarelas digitales, y otras veces he realizado insectos con esta técnica. Les comparto parte del proceso de dibujo.

Step by step
Paso a paso
1.
We begin with the preparation of the canvas we’ll use. In my case, I have a good collection of textures that I use, and I especially like this one of rough, coarse paper, as if it were imitating recycled paper. I’m sharing it with you in case you’d like to use it—you can use it as you please.
Comenzamos con la preparación del lienzo que usaremos. En mi caso tengo una buena colección de texturas que utilizo, y me gusta en especial esta de papel áspero y rugoso, como si imitara el papel reciclado. Se las comparto por si quieren usarla, pueden usarla como plazcan.

We continue by sketching the general shape of our insect. I’ll be using the symmetry tool to move faster with a bilateral axis.
Continuamos planteando un boceto con la forma general de nuestro insecto. Estaré usando la herramienta de simetría para avanzar más rápido con un eje bilateral.
3.
For the line art, I’ll be using a brush that emulates a small paintbrush. The brush doesn’t end in a point but rather in a square shape, and it has a bit of texture.
Para el line art estaré usando un pincel que emula una pequeña brocha. El pincel no termina en punta sino en cuadrado y tiene un poco de textura.
4.
Finally, we’ll simply add color in layers. To achieve lights and shadows, I’ll be using only three colors: blue for the shadows, green for the body, and yellow for the highlights.
Por último, simplemente daremos color en capas. Para lograr luces y sombras estaré usando solo tres colores: azul para las sombras, verde para el cuerpo y amarillo para los highlights.
