Island Lake Afternoon Hike

in EXHAUST2 years ago

I just finished a 6.088km hiking that lasted about 1hh:32mm:8ss !

The plan was to hike the entire 5.5 miles of the yellow trail at Island Lake Recreation Area, but it was much more slippery than expected. I forgot that this trail is very popular with mountain bikers, even in winter. So, once a bunch of fat tires plow through the trail, it becomes icy and very slippery when wearing just regular hiking shoes. And lots of ups and downs in this trail (which is why it's popular for mountain biking), making it even trickier to walk in these conditions. Of course, that means our pace was significantly slower than usual. As we only had about 2 hours before nightfall, that was not sufficient to finish the loop and we turned around after about 1.75 miles for a total of about 3.5 miles only. I should have known and brought headlamps, as it happens to us almost every time.

As this trail is shared by hikers and mountain bikers, there is a direction for each. Hikers go one way, mountain bikers go the other way. Just so they can see each other before crashing :) So, in the second part, after turning around, we were in the opposite direction. Luckily, most bikers were already done as like I said, we were getting close to nightfall.

Anyways, it was still pretty nice, with a temperature just 3 or 4 degrees Celsius below freezing. The sun would have made it even better of course, but it's okay. That makes for a perfect active resting day, so I can hopefully go for another run on Sunday.

Till then, keep Exhausting!
