Recently, Tegoshi Yuya (my favorite Japanese idol/singer), came back to the music scene and released his first digital single with the song called "CINNAMON".
After he left Johnny's Entertainment (agency for male idols in Japan), he started his YouTube channel and became more active on social media to continue his connection with his fans. This is one of the perks of getting out of Johnny's. The artist get more freedom and Tegoshi appears to be very happy and satisfied and that's more than enough for me as a fan.
For the past year after he left, he sometimes upload cover songs on his channel and every time he does, it makes me really happy because I love his voice so much. I believe he's the best singer among everyone in Johnny's! He really has this amazing voice and he can reach really high notes, which is really awesome!
Of course, I feel really glad when I see him perform, especially when he sings and dance. However, listening to his original song again after a while makes me so delighted that I even challenged myself to translate it. Just a disclaimer, my Japanese sucks and I have to rely on a Japanese-English dictionary in translating the song. And no, I don't like using translators because they make no sense most of the time.
First, let's listen to this awesome song by Tegoshi Yuya... Here's CINNAMON.

Please do support him on YouTube if you like his song. <3 <3 <3
Now, as for the subtitles, I saw a full Japanese lyrics from a website called SHAZAM and used it as a reference.

And for the English translation I did, this is what I came up with. Well, I chose not to make it per line just like in the table above because I didn't translate it word for word, but more on the thought. Here it goes..
English Translation:
I wonder what you think of when I told you I like your face when you laugh You have a habit of saying "The weather is fine, isn't it?" even on rainy days and windy days Your lipstick smeared so much on my chest (He's hugging the person he loves in this case) Although I said, "Everything is already fine/alright!" I can't say I'm a coward The stain is soaked in my chest (stain refers to the lipstick stain, I think) I want to know everything about you, but I'll stick to these useless words Wouldn't it be awesome to be with you? Your lipstick smeared so much on my chest
(NOTE: I'm not good at Japanese, so this isn't accurate... It's more of my interpretation of the song)
You deceived me by laughing and by telling my your eyes are red because they're itchy
You always get rid of the bitterness in my heart
That heartfelt time when we sweetly entwined had an unforgettable cinnamon scent
I didn't think that loving like this is painful
In my arms until such a time
Even if you lost your voice from crying
I won't let you go
You still didn't lift up your face
Please show me your face, even though your cheeks are still a little damp
If you're unsure about relying on me
Just hug me
You'd think the cinnamon scent is enough
Your faint sigh overlaps with me stroking your hair
Your small body is tarnished in pain
I wonder if we can divide that pain
I want to protect you
I want to know your hair, your lips, your nose, whatever your shape is
With your voice and with your scent...
I didn't think that loving like this is so painful
Love fell on your moist lips (I actually don't get this part 落とすと means to drop, so since it's talking about love, I suppose "to fall" is better... I have no idea.. sorry)
I'll just laugh openly
My tears won't stop
It's my first time trying to translate a full song. I haven't studied Japanese in ages, but I tried my best to get the message as much as I could. In one video, Tegoshi explained that the song is about true love and how you want to cherish and protect it.
Anyway, here's how I came up with my translations..
After printing out the lyrics in Japanese from the website I mentioned earlier, I decided to right the romaji first so, it's easier for me to translate later on. Also, you may noticed, I left some spaces and encircled a lot of kanji characters. These are the characters I'm unfamiliar with... well, there are some I'm familiar with but I didn't know how to read it because it's paired with another kanji. Usually, how the word is pronounced changes entirely.
In order to fill in the blanks, I relied on my listening skills and rechecked them using the dictionary.
On a separate sheet, I translated the lyrics word for word and based on that, I'll figure out what the sentence means. It's more complicated because it's a song lyrics, so the grammar even in Japanese is more difficult to understand.
First picture is me figuring out the meaning of each word and in the second picture, trying to make sense on every line there is in this song.
Special thanks to @dbuzz challenge because I got motivated to actually accomplish this goal of translating a whole Japanese song in English. This might not be entirely correct, but we could at least understand what the song's message is. It's about how loving someone. It's also about how you want to share not only the good things, but also the negative ones when you're really into someone. When you care for someone so much, that you want to know that person entirely... flaws included... and that you just want to protect the person you love the most. It also somehow shows how painful loving someone truly is.
Okaaaay~ I'm being the hopeless romantic version of myself again. But anyway, I love Tegoshi and I'm happy to put in some effort to understand his song. I look forward to more of his songs in the future. <3
Here's me and Tegoshi... hahaha... xDD You can also see one of my Tego sketches behind. :)
