The Risk Of Leverage Trading

in Project HOPE5 years ago

I have just learnt about this term called ‘Leverage Trading’ when @culgin asked me whether I gained my profit from cryptocurrency trading using this method when I posted an article about how I gathered small profit without taking risk of waiting.

Leverage allows us to increase our potential profit with a small deposit by having the trading provider giving us a loan to allow us to invest in a greater amount with our purchase.

This increases our profit significantly but it will also make us lose more since we are actually investing more based on leverage ratio.

Leverage trading is useful to magnify our profit but we may lose like crazy when the price of the cryptocurrency drops since we are borrowing the money that we do not have to invest actually.

This is a short-term investment using money we do not have but we may lose more than we can afford.

It is really as good as gambling with high risk.

Leverage trading is using money that we do not have so we may end up losing all the money we have and some may even end in up debt.

I am definitely not using this leverage trading.

I manage to gain some nice profit from selling OMG as I had bought it before it was released in Coinbase. After the release, there was a nice increase in its price for me to sell with a profit.

I also sold my Steem to convert into other cryptocurrencies.

At this moment, I am using mainly my profit to invest and trade so if I do lose, I am losing my profit from my earning in crypto trading and my past Steem reward for posting at Steem platform.

It is always wise to invest with what we can afford as well as what we are able to risk losing totally.

I hope you don't get me wrong. Leverage is a double edge sword and it can be useful for capital intensive investments. For instance, when you buy a property in Singapore, you pay 20% downpayment and the rest are loan. This in a way is a already a leverage. Also, leverage is needed in investments like Forex where the percentage move is small.

I do not think crypto investments need too further leverage because it is already volatile in nature. The most I can accept is to take up some DeFi loans and use that additional funds to buy more crypto. Haha..

As the first video pointed out, there are people who 100x leverage for their crypto trades. This is highly risky if the traders do not know what they are doing. One of the possible reasons we see so much price volatility is because of manipulation by leverage trading platforms like Bitmex. These platforms profit from liquidated positions, hence, it is in their interest to create sudden opposite price movements when positions are too stacked to one side.

Thanks for spreading your knowledge as it does alert newbies like me who haven't really learn so much with the different types of trading available. For me, leverage trading is too risky since I am not single so I have a family to consider. High risk should never be in my dictionary. One of the regular investment is actually the regular buying of Nikko AM Singapore STI ETF through DBS bank that deduct via Giro monthly from my account. It is supposed to be better as we are buying regardless of market up or down. I guess this is what they call cost averaging. 😁 Feel free to share your knowledge with me whenever I write about crypto-related articles.

Leverage Trading has it's risks but it can be reduced/ escaped when we do away with greed.

Most people get liquidated because of greed. They want to use little margin to trade against large volumes of coins.

I agree. Greed is often the main cause of losing. Wise words! I am new to this and I only start to learn about it recently. 🤓

I heard of the word just two days ago through @Tomlee. I'm yet to do my research to fully understand its workings. Thanks for the share.

Yes, you need do your own research

Welcome! It is indeed important to find out more on our own to ensure we do not make the wrong choices and mistakes. Find out more will be good as I may only be giving the surface of it since I only got to know about it not very long ago. 👍
