The Smederevo fortress during the despot of Djurdj Brankovic was the center of an entire country. And so it had to be on a large surface.
As a large building at that time, masonry lasted from 1428-1439.
Its location at the mouth of the River Jezava on the Danube covers an area of approximately 11 hectares.
The fortress is in the form of an irregular triangle and is divided into two parts.
A smaller part was used as a court despot while a larger part was used for the people and the lords.
The construction of the Small Town took only two years, which is very small for such work.
But the workers who built the fort were literally dying of fatigue.
When they built the small town where the despots were staying with family, the second major part of the fort began to burn.
Most of it was built around 1439.
Then 19 towers and a canal were added to merge the two rivers of the Danube and the Dam.
So the fort was surrounded by water and it was not easy to conquer.
The town of Smederevo fell into Turkish hands permanently in 1459, and thus the Serbian medieval state.
Subsequently, the fort was used by various armies and even Hitler's army during the Second World War when the stronghold exploded.
he fort itself suffered minor damage while the rest of the Smederevo within a few kilometers of the fort was flattened.
Today, the walls are being rebuilt and the fort is open to all visitors.
