My Family's Sinulog Weekend!

in Weekend Experiences3 months ago

Last weekend, one of the biggest festivals in my country was held. It's Sinulog Festival. In the past, my family and I used to join the festivities. We enjoy watching the contingents from all over Cebu and even from other places in the Philippines street dance and perform to their hearts content. We also used to enjoy checking out the parade floats and giants. Then later at night, we enjoy watching the fireworks.

It's how we used to spend the cultural aspect of Sinulog. However, my family no longer do these stuff. Aside from the increasing temperatures, the area where the festival is held is usually very crowded and it takes too much energy to survive the festival. I remember walking for a long time just to go places because the roads are blocked and riding any forms of transport takes years... at least that's what it felt like. haha Well, those were still fun memories.

Last Sunday, instead of joining the festivities in the city, my family and I did our small celebration at home.

We decorated a small portion of our front yard for the celebrant and we had a barbecue party while listening to Sinulog songs and the usual dance beat.

Papa did the grilling while mama and I did the preparation. We took some photos while happily chatting about a lot of things including the previous adventures we had during the Sinulog(s) in the past. We reminisced how I was more excited to see my favorite basketball player than the famous artists in our country before.

We also talked about how hot the weather was, so it must have been tough for the performers. I was able to participate in the street dancing in the provincial Sinulog when I was in high school. It was a smaller version of this one and it was held in the countryside. I had a great and fantastic experience despite the mixed sunny and rainy weather that time.

Festivals are fun, but I just can't stand the crowd anymore. It makes me dizzy that I'd rather stay at home and relax. I've become more introverted as years passed by.

Anyway, let's talk about the food we prepared!

Since we decided to have a barbecue party, we prepared some pork and fish. Mama requested for some corn and in my case, I asked for some cabbage. I guess these are also very suitable for grilling.

I couldn't take a photo of the cooked fish and my cabbage wrap but we really enjoyed them. The night before, mama and I also made some fruit salad with coconut strips. We haven't had it for a long time, so it's pretty refreshing. Papa especially likes it, but I think it's a bit too sweet.

It was just the three of us, so we were able to enjoy the dishes until Monday. haha I just re-heated them in the air fryer. I want to do barbecue again... maybe when my cousins come over next time. :)

Ohh, you too celebrated a festival. It's amazing though that the liveliness during Sinulog stays the same, while the Fiesta is our place is kinda boring na but still fun. Naging boring lang coz di na ganon karami ang people. But still, its still a fun activity here especially the street dancing. Anyways, maganda din sa bahay na nag celebrate. Pag talaga nagkaka edad na no, yong masaya satin dati is parang wala ng gana satin ngayon.

Kaya nga ehh.. hahaha
Though, we continued the religious part. We attended the solemn procession before the pandemic, though di na talaga kami bumabalik for the festivities the next day. Kaso, pati ngayon, di na pwede sa procession kasi konting lakad, dizzy na si mader... So, team bahay nlng talaga... 😅✌️

Marami na talagang nagbago, but no choice but change some things talaga.
