Did you know that the currency symbol of Ether (Ethereum) is the Greek capital letter Xi Ξ?
Why Xi for Ethereum?
While Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency in history that even got its own currency symbol in the Unicode Standard in 2017 (U+20BF), Ethereum has been using the Greek capital letter Xi (U+039E) for the last few years.
The idea behind this was probably meant as an interim solution, until it gets its own Unicode character, to fall back on an existing one that can be used and rendered on virtually all systems without problems, just like a Greek letter.
According to Andreas Antonopoulos (Mastering Ethereum), the capital letter Xi was probably chosen because it looks like a large stylized E (for Ether or Ethereum).
However, there were also suggestions to use a check symbol (♦ Black Diamond Suit) instead of the Xi, for example, which is more similar to the Ethereum logo, until a Ethereum-specific Unicode character is standardized.
However, the Xi symbol prevailed, which also looks pretty cool in my opinion.
How do you like the Xi symbol Ξ for Ethereum? Do you think Ethereum might even get its own Unicode character one day, or will we stick with the Xi symbol out of tradition?
