I agree with you about pension plans - in the UK there are several notorious examples of employers raiding the pension plan. Robert Maxwell is probably the most infamous one here, but there are local authorities who have used pension funds to finance redundancies to reduce their immediate direct costs. There was a joke about not going to work for them because essentially they were bankrupt.
One of the problems with pension funds is that they have conditions that were created for another time and economic situation and the company that is obligated to them is no longer able to finance the fund. We have had organisations here forced to close because of their increasing pension liabilities. So, no job and no pension.
